Social Service Practitioner III/II/I- Public Defender

Position The Office of the Public Defender is hiring Social Service Practitioners (SSP) to provide professional social work services to adult and juvenile clients and their families as they navigate the criminal justice system. Responsibilities Investigate and support cases involving clients with physical or psychological issues; write mitigation reports and mental health plans. Appear and testify in court and attend Special Attendance Review Board (SARB) meetings. Participate in outreach events and act as preceptor to social work interns. Meet clients in multiple settings (home, jail, prison, state hospital, etc.) and provide case management interventions. Develop and implement treatment plans, perform biopsychosocial reports, and make referrals to community services. Qualifications Must be within three (3) months of completing a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from an accredited university to qualify for SSP I. SSP II requires a completed MSW degree and a satisfactory work progress report; must qualify within 12 months or be terminated. SSP III requires a completed MSW degree and at least 3 years full‑time service (6,240 hours) as an SSP II or equivalent. Legal, behavioral, or social service experience is preferred; experience not required for SSP II. Spanish‑English bilingual candidates encouraged; may receive additional compensation. Applicants must be willing to accept assignment in Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino, or Victorville. Location Assignments may be made at Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino, or Victorville. Preference for location will be considered where possible. Benefits Salary ranges: SSP I $66,476.80–$86,923.20 annually; SSP II $69,742.40–$98,259.20 annually; SSP III $75,088.00–$106,100.80 annually. Step increases up to the maximum step; merit‑based. Paid holidays, vacation, sick time, and county pension. Flexible schedule with option for a 4/10 workday. Student loan forgiveness possible for San Bernardino employees under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. County Modified Benefits Option (MBO) provides wage differential. Conditions of Employment Must pass a background check prior to appointment. Must be willing to travel throughout the county and make provisions for transportation.
