Job Description

Location:  Henry Ford Jackson Hospital

Schedule: 3-12 Hour Shifts; Weekend and holiday requirement

Shift: 6pm-6:30am

 

The Clinical Unit Leader (CUL), under general supervision from the unit manager and/or director, serves as the shift supervisor and clinical liaison between staff, physicians, and management. The CUL provides continuity of leadership, functioning as a supervisor, mentor, and resource person to ensure unit standards are maintained and a collaborative work environment is fostered.

Leadership and Staff Development: Partner with the unit manager to attract, develop, and retain qualified staff members. Responsibilities include hiring, orientation, performance monitoring and evaluation, problem-solving, employee counseling, and corrective action as needed. Assign and direct staff activities while maintaining payroll oversight.

Clinical Practice: Rotate to off-shifts as determined by staffing needs and the nurse manager to provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching, and staff evaluation. Deliver direct patient care as needed to maintain clinical competency and support the care team.

Unit Management: Collaborate with the unit manager to develop and implement unit goals and objectives. Plan staffing levels consistent with patient population needs and budgetary requirements. Participate in daily operational planning, prioritization of patient services, and management of urgent and emergent situations.

Customer Service and Quality: Serve as a primary contact for internal and external customers, fostering a positive service environment that meets all quality and accreditation standards. Implement new processes and monitor ongoing initiatives to support organizational excellence.

Quality Assurance and Evidence-Based Practice: Participate in planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit quality metrics and improvement activities. Promote the integration of research findings and evidence-based practice among nursing staff, encouraging clinical research involvement as applicable.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

• Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate's Degree of Science in Nursing (ADN) with commitment to obtaining BSN within five (5) years
• Minimum three (3) years of acute care nursing experience
• Demonstrated leadership experience in a clinical setting (Charge Nurse, Supervisor, Shift Supervisor, or equivalent role)
• Knowledge of maternal-child health populations and services
• Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and nursing process skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to lead and mentor nursing staff
• Professional nursing certification(s) relevant to clinical practice and leadership

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

• Current Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license
• Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

• Clinical experience in postpartum care, labor and delivery, nursery, or pediatrics
• Formal leadership training or certification
