Transportation Maintainer 3 (Sweeper Operator)

Position Overview The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) invites experienced agency employees to apply for the position of Transportation Maintainer 3 (Sweeper Operator) located within District 4 at the Waterbury Maintenance Garage. Position Highlights Monday – Friday Full Time, 40 hours per week First Shift, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM Location: Waterbury Maintenance Garage (on‑site) Responsibilities This position is responsible for safely operating a sweeper and other heavy equipment in accordance with safety guidelines, performing daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment, and supporting emergency duties such as snow and ice removal. Example Duties Operate and maintain sweepers, power‑pickup sweepers, snow blowers, and other listed equipment. Perform daily maintenance and safety inspections. Assist in snow and ice removal operations and respond to emergencies. Support other maintenance activities such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, and mechanical repair. Requirements Current CDL Class A or B with tank endorsement. Valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC). Residency within 30 miles of the posted job location. Respirator physical completed and current respirator fit test. Willingness to accept emergency assignments, including mandatory winter overtime from November 1 to April 30, and potential multi‑day work during storms. Qualifications Minimum of 2 years experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, or maintenance of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports. Experience operating sweeper equipment preferred. Acceptable substitutes: vocational/technical school diploma in a maintenance trade. Benefits Professional growth and development opportunities.
