Laser Operator Apprentice

POSITION OVERVIEW

Responsible for producing high quality cut parts while operating flat or tube laser (including fiber and CO₂ lasers) and plasma cutting machines or technologies. Incumbent is responsible for moving materials within the warehouse during different stages of the order fulfillment process—receiving, stocking, pulling to process, surface finishing, grinding, packaging, and loading parts onto transport. Additional responsibilities include preparing and completing work orders, job programming, modifying cut nests for material efficiency, and ensuring all documentation is filled out clearly and in accordance with company ISO standards. Maintain good housekeeping and perform all duties safely and mindful of safety. Incumbent provides excellent, professional, and responsive customer service to internal and external customers, assisting the production team in efficient order processing while focusing on quality.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

The incumbent will employ all of their warehousing and machine operating experience to expertly perform and accomplish the following objectives within the prescribed timelines. Within the first 90 days: become well‑versed in IMS processes, maintain an excellent attendance record with no tardies or absences barring extenuating circumstances. Ongoing: complete all IMS safety‑related training and updates, demonstrate zero tolerance for safety issues, provide at least three safety improvement suggestions within the first 90 days, and adhere to IMS safe practices while using a cell phone only in designated areas. Within the first 30 days: proficiently perform machine startup procedures, manual plasma and laser cutting head setups, load and unload finished parts, and verify completed metal work pieces against customer drawings or requirements. Within the first 30 days: obtain and document materials according to QSP 8.1 product identification with zero errors. Within the first 60 days: develop and maintain an Excel spreadsheet with tested laser‑cut tables for various metals and thicknesses; define and implement a quality inspection process to keep Within the first 60 days: become competent in standard packaging of delivered or shipped orders according to QSI 9.1.6, maintaining zero packaging rejection issues. Within the first 90 days: correct cutting problems by adjusting laser tables, gas pressures, cut speeds, and machine settings, and become certified on applicable industrial trucks. Within 120 days: log, schedule, perform, and maintain all required daily maintenance and service procedures for equipment, and handle outside service requests independently. Maintain housekeeping: at shift end, properly dispose of rems, empty trash cans, clean machines, sweep floor, and complete and scan required paperwork, maintaining zero write‑ups. Adhere to scheduled meal and break periods without exceptions unless approved by supervisor. Within the first 60 days: inspect incoming materials per QSP 10.1 Receiving Inspection with zero delays or issues. Within the first 90 days: maintain a spreadsheet of finishing tables for Timesaver and hand‑finishing equipment. Within 90 days: maintain a spreadsheet of plasma machine cut tables for stainless and carbon steels.

COMPENTENCIES

Driving company vehicles and/or equipment courteously, complying with all vehicle laws and regulations, prioritizing safety. Performing quality control inspections with precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, tape measure, and height gauges. Proper use of granite tables, height blocks, and high‑tolerance inspection equipment. Safely operating finishing equipment, grinders, and air tools. Recording machine settings and job notes in multiple software systems. Effectively performing laser and plasma setup operations, including file import, machine loading, and unloading. Communicating well orally and in writing. Taking initiative. Handling sheet material or metal plates safely while loading or unloading equipment.

REQUIREMENTS / SPECIFICATIONS

Advanced computer skills: proficient word processing and comfortable learning new software. Successful history of monitoring consumables and maintaining inventory levels. Safely operating all cutting equipment, including flat laser, tube laser, plasma cutter, forklift, loading/unloading equipment, and finishing equipment. Ability to read blueprints, work orders, and production schedules to determine product or job specifications. Master the processing capability of all equipment, maximizing safe operation. Possesses the heart to serve and provides an exceptional customer experience and high‑quality finished products.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to see, hear, speak, and write clearly, have manual dexterity for occasional reaching and lifting of small objects, and operate office equipment. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds without assistance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The office is clean, orderly, properly lighted, and ventilated. Noise levels are considered low to medium. Reasonable accommodations may be made to allow differently‑abled individuals to perform essential functions.
