SFGATE North Coast Contributing Editor

Role Description

Under the direction of SFGATE’s Deputy Managing Editor, the contributing editor (20 hours a week) will be a versatile journalist with a deep understanding of the North Coast region of California, including:

• Mendocino
• Humboldt
• Del Norte counties
• Redding
• Shasta County
• Lassen Volcanic National Park

The contributing editor will have the intellectual curiosity to tell stories that matter to both locals and visitors, understanding the issues and ideologies that dominate the region. They will toggle between:

• Fast-paced daily stories
• Well-sourced, deep-dive features

Qualifications

• 3 to 4 years of relevant experience writing and editing at a publication or in a digital media environment
• Based in or around the North Coast of California, or in Sacramento, with willingness to travel to far Northern California
• Deep knowledge of the area that spans beyond a single discipline
• Passion for journalism and telling stories
• Familiarity with SFGATE and understanding of the brand and voice

Requirements

• Consistently generate ideas across a broad range of categories
• Be autonomous in managing an editorial calendar and meeting deadlines
• Maintain a fantastic network within the community
• Write two features a week on average
