Lead CNC Lathe Setup Machinist

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced, hands-on Lead CNC Lathe Setup Machinist with demonstrated expertise in independently setting up, troubleshooting, and optimizing multi-axis CNC lathes.

This is a senior-level technical position for a skilled machinist who can take ownership of complex setups, work from engineering drawings and specifications, resolve machining challenges, and provide technical guidance to other machinists and operators.

This is not an entry-level or machine operator position. Candidates must have substantial hands-on experience performing CNC lathe setups independently.

Key Responsibilities

• Independently perform complete setups for repeat and new jobs on multi-axis CNC lathes.
• Read, interpret, troubleshoot, and make necessary edits to CNC programs and G-code at the machine.
• Perform first-piece inspections and make adjustments to achieve dimensional accuracy and quality requirements.
• Optimize setups, tooling, cutting parameters, and machining processes to improve efficiency for lights out machining.
• Collaborate with manufacturing engineers, quality personnel, and shop leadership to resolve technical issues.
• Provide hands-on technical guidance, coaching, and training to less-experienced machinists and machine operators.
• Support standardization of setup procedures, documentation, and machining best practices.
• Accurately document setup parameters, production data, and inspection results.
• Support safe, efficient machine operation and preventive maintenance activities.
• Adhere to company safety procedures, quality requirements, and established manufacturing practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of direct, hands-on multi-axis CNC lathe setup experience, with 7 or more years preferred.
• Experience with Doosan CNC lathes or comparable multi-axis turning centers.
• Experience with Swiss CNC lathes, optional
• Experience machining aerospace, defense, or other high-precision components.
• Familiarity with ISO 9001 and AS9100 quality requirements.
• Experience supporting lights-out or unattended machining operations.
• Experience with lean manufacturing practices including 5-S.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, bend, kneel, and perform machine setups.
• Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to perform precision machining and inspection tasks, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment involving machinery, lubricants, and metal materials.
