Associate Actuary

Job Summary This is a senior level actuarial analyst position. The role participates in Highmark’s Actuarial Executive Development Program and is expected to make continued progress towards actuarial credential. It involves defining and diagnosing problems, outlining data requirements, devising potential solutions, guiding and mentoring staff, and providing decision support to team members. The analyst develops actuarial studies, analyses, and presentation materials, and recommends actions to management. The position supports functions such as insurance premium and pricing development, claim trend analysis, experience studies, medical economics, profitability analysis, wellness studies, predictive modeling, provider efficiency, provider contracting analysis, and claim reserving. Responsibilities Define and diagnose problems, outline data requirements, and devise potential solutions. Create studies, analyses, and presentation materials to inform decision makers and recommend actions to management. Ensure internal and external consistency of all work, performing reasonability checks and exceeding customer expectations. Utilize internal and external knowledge forums to gain broader industry perspectives, and provide technical input on accurate and efficient work. Identify outliers and anomalies in others’ work, and seek continual feedback to advance personal development and career goals. Understand the environment, goals, and objectives of the position, team, and internal customers, and propose process enhancements that align with corporate goals. Independently manage time and resources across multiple projects, prioritizing tasks and maintaining communication with management. Interact with stakeholders to foster cooperation and teamwork, effectively explaining technical work to both technical and non‑technical audiences. Guide and mentor less experienced staff, providing direction and constructive feedback. Perform other duties as assigned or requested. Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or a closely related discipline. Preferred: Master’s Degree or its equivalent in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or a closely related discipline. Experience Required: 3 years experience in an Actuarial role. 6 Exam Components. Preferred: 10 or more Exam Components. Licenses and Certifications Required: None Preferred: None Skills In-depth knowledge of actuarial principles, concepts, practices, and processes across multiple disciplines. Expertise to complete complex assignments and the ability to visualize, articulate, and solve problems while leading others on straightforward tasks. Analytical skills. Language Requirements None Travel Requirement 0% – 25% Position Type Office-based with regular training of others, frequent travel between sites, and a sedentary work environment. Physical demands include occasional lifting and moving of up to 20 lbs, and use of audible speech and visual tasks. Physical, Mental Demands and Working Conditions Office‑based work with regular travel, training duties, and physical activities such as carrying light loads and performing repetitive motions. The role requires consistent verbal communication and focus on detail while managing multiple projects.
