DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital and space planning, space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. The University's main campus is spread across more than 2,000 acres and includes over 500 buildings comprising more than 8 million square feet. The department oversees operating budgets of over $60 million, manages a project portfolio of approximately $990 million, and employs over 400 full-time staff to carry out the duties necessary for campus development and operation. JOB SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Plumbing Shop Supervisor, the Plumber performs the duties of a journeyman-level plumber for building maintenance, repair, and construction, and a journeyman-level fitter for underground utilities construction and maintenance. The Plumber supports the mission of the University and the Physical Plant in operating and maintaining a safe, clean, and efficiently run campus.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION Budgeted Salary: $55.61/hour - The hourly salary is Step 1.0 $55.61/hour. Upon successfully completing the 6 month probation period, the hourly salary will increase to Step 2.0 $61.78.

JOB DUTIES 65% - Plumbing
- Performs the duties of a journey-level plumber for all campus building systems.
- Repairs, installs, adjusts, maintains, and replaces all plumbing fixtures and related piping.
- Performs roddering, snaking, and high-pressure water jet roddering of piping drain systems.
- Performs soldering, welding, fusing, pipe fitting, threading, and fabrication.
- Adheres to current plumbing codes.
- Reads blueprints and diagrams and follows written preventative maintenance programs.
- Drives a University vehicle to transport materials and tools to campus work areas.
- Performs duties of a journey-level fitter for underground utilities construction and maintenance.
- Performs maintenance, repairs, and installations on the campus water distribution system, natural gas distribution system, and sanitary sewer system.
- Operates jackhammers, tampers, and concrete saw cutters.
- Cuts and threads pipes.
- Shovels, digs, excavates, and backfills.
- Performs safety inspections and routine maintenance on tools and equipment used and on assigned vehicles.
- Attends safety and training classes and performs tasks with adherence to safety protocols.
- Follows all product and University-specific safety procedures when using tools and equipment.
- Writes and maintains a weekly timesheet.
- Employs professional interpersonal skills when interacting with members of the campus community.
- Helps Physical Plant maintain an inventory of shop materials, supplies, and tools by informing supervisor of specific needs.
- Reviews project submittals relevant to plumbing and plumbing infrastructure.
- Journey-level plumber skills and experience.
- Ability to maintain, use, repair, install, and construct building plumbing systems, gas piping, sewer systems, plumbing fixtures, food service equipment, including soldering, brazing, and using sewer and drain piping snakes, rodders, and high-pressure water jet machinery.
- Ability to maintain and repair natural gas, water, and sewer systems related to underground utility systems.
- Journey-level skills in the maintenance of equipment, tools and machinery.
- Ability to read and fabricate plumbing systems from drawings and blueprints.
- Knowledge of CAL OSHA and state and federal uniform plumbing codes.
- Written communication skills sufficient for professional interactions with members of the campus community.
- Oral communication and interpersonal skills sufficient for professional interactions with members of the campus community.
- Plumbing apprenticeship through an employer with a C-36 Plumbing Contractors License registered with the CSLB of California.
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
- Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
- Ability to ascend/descend ladders with or without accommodation.
- Ability to conduct outdoor site visits, including use of required personal protective equipment, as required to conduct investigations, inspections, or view work in place.
- Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
- Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
- Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs, and work an alternate work schedule shift as required.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
