Financial Counselor

Position Overview The Financial Counselor represents the patient and Singing River Health System (SRHS) in all aspects of patient responsibility to resolve amounts due in a feasible and amicable manner. He/She handles questions regarding patient accounts efficiently and timely while displaying empathy and professionalism. Responsibilities Represent the patient and SRHS to resolve account balances. Handle patient account questions with efficiency and empathy. Educate patients and families on SRHS policies and payment options, including financial assistance programs. Screen patients for eligibility for assistance programs and conduct careful financial evaluations. Make payment decisions in a self-supervised manner that benefit both the patient and SRHS. Maintain a professional appearance and communicate with diverse backgrounds. Work independently and cope with frequent interruptions. Qualifications High School Graduate or equivalent; college courses in healthcare, business, or finance preferred. Certifications: Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) or Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR); Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) preferred. Completion of de‑escalation training by the end of orientation (90 days) and appropriate level of de‑escalation training thereafter. Minimum one (1) year experience in medical terminology, insurance regulations, professional billing procedures, and collection regulations. Preferred: one (1) year financial counselor experience or at least three (3) years in a healthcare revenue cycle role with emphasis on insurance and billing. Minimum one (1) year customer service experience involving registration, scheduling, and insurance verification. Minimum one (1) year experience as a Medical Assistant preferred. Location & Shift Shift: 8:00am – 4:30pm. Location: Singing River Gulfport Hospital. Physical Demands Moderately active: sitting, moving around the office, and occasional travel to other SRHS facilities. Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull objects as required. Exposure to body fluids and other hazards; requires stable visual and hearing ability. Must manage extended periods of work without excessive fatigue and accommodate schedule changes. Mental Demands Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to make decisions under pressure and meet deadlines. Emotional stability to handle high stress situations. Detail‑oriented with strong multi‑tasking ability. Special Demands Superior customer service skills and professional etiquette.
