Position Overview
Littell Steel Company is an AISC-certified structural steel and bridge fabricator with more than 80 years of experience fabricating complex steel structures.
We are seeking an experienced Shop Foreman to lead the day-to-day work of our union fabrication shop. This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for coordinating our fitters, welders, and shop personnel while maintaining high standards for safety, quality, productivity, and schedule performance .
The ideal candidate is an experienced structural steel fabricator who understands how work moves through a shop, can read and interpret fabrication drawings, and knows how to lead people effectively in a demanding production environment.
Key Responsibilities
● Lead and supervise fitters, welders, and other shop personnel during daily fabrication activities.
● Plan, assign, sequence, and monitor work to meet production schedules and project priorities.
● Coordinate manpower and workflow across fabrication activities to keep work moving efficiently through the shop.
● Read and interpret structural steel drawings, shop drawings, and fabrication details .
● Oversee layout, fit-up, assembly, and fabrication of bridge and complex structural steel components , including plate girders, trusses, built-up members, and large assemblies.
● Work closely with Quality Control/CWI personnel to ensure fabrication meets applicable AISC, AWS, project, and customer requirements.
● Identify fabrication problems early and work with QC, project management, and shop personnel to resolve them before they result in rework or schedule delays.
● Maintain high standards for dimensional accuracy, fit-up, welding preparation, and workmanship.
● Enforce company safety policies, PPE requirements, and safe work practices throughout the shop.
● Maintain an organized, professional, and productive shop environment.
● Hold employees accountable while providing clear direction, coaching, and feedback.
● Support and uphold company policies and applicable union work rules .
● Communicate manpower needs, equipment issues, training needs, and production concerns to management.
● Participate in production planning and problem-solving meetings as needed.
Qualifications
Required
● Significant experience working in a structural steel fabrication shop .
● Strong knowledge of structural steel fitting, layout, and fabrication .
● Ability to confidently read and interpret shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and details .
● Previous experience as a Foreman, Lead Fitter, Working Foreman, or similar shop leadership position .
● Strong understanding of welding processes and how fit-up, sequencing, and fabrication practices affect weld quality.
● Ability to lead experienced tradespeople, set expectations, and hold employees accountable.
● Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
● Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and production performance .
Preferred
● Experience with bridge fabrication and heavy structural steel .
● Experience fabricating plate girders, trusses, built-up members, and complex assemblies .
● Experience working in an AISC-certified fabrication facility .
● Experience in a union fabrication environment .
● Familiarity with AWS D1.1 and/or AWS D1.5 requirements.
● Experience working alongside QC/CWI personnel and NDT processes , including UT and MT.
