ESOL for Employment Instructor (Part-Time)

POSITION: Part-Time ESOL for Employment Instructor (Non-Credit Instructor): SNAP Path to Work Program, Center for Adult Education; Lawrence Campus (45 Franklin Street); up to 6 hours/week.

SUMMARY: The Center for Adult Education is seeking dedicated ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) instructors to teach ESOL for employment classes. The ideal candidate is passionate about supporting adult English language learners and is committed to creating an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environment that promotes student growth and success. This role requires knowledge of ESL/ESOL instructional strategies, strong communication skills, and the ability to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of adult learners. Non-Credit Instructors are hired on an as-needed basis. Instruction is delivered in person on the Lawrence campus with classes scheduled during evening hours.

SCHEDULE: Up to 6 hours per week; evening instruction on the Lawrence Campus

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Develop and deliver engaging, standards-aligned ESOL instruction tailored to adult learners' proficiency levels and needs.
• Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages active participation, promotes language acquisition, and supports student leadership.
• Implement a variety of instructional strategies and methodologies to support student engagement and achievement.
• Use department-approved curriculum, instructional materials, and Brightspace to support teaching and learning.
• Assess students' English language proficiency using formal and informal methods and use data to inform and guide instructional decisions.
• Provide timely, constructive feedback to support language development and academic progress.
• Support program operations by administering pre- and post-assessments and providing substitute coverage as needed.
• Prepare and submit written unit and lesson plans that align with appropriate content and Massachusetts English Language Proficiency Standards.
• Participate in classroom observations, welcome constructive feedback, and demonstrate a willingness to refine instructional practices to improve student success.
• Maintain confidential, accurate, and complete records and submit them in a timely manner in accordance with funder and institutional requirements.
• Monitor student participation and attendance, follow up on absences, and track assessment progress as part of an intrusive advising approach.
• Collaborate with CAE staff to develop individualized student support plans that promote retention and successful outcomes.
• Participate in subcommittee meetings, staff meetings, and Common Planning Time.
• Proactively engage in professional development opportunities to strengthen instructional practice and remain current with best practices in adult education.
• Ensure student participation in course evaluations, surveys, and other activities that support continuous program improvement.
• Use data to differentiate instruction, monitor student attendance and progress, and support students in identifying career pathways that promote program completion.
• Maintain regular communication with Center for Adult Education staff.
• Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, all required qualifications must be met by date of hire.

• Bachelor's degree in Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Experience teaching ESOL, ESL, or adult education courses.
• Knowledge of second-language acquisition theory and evidence-based ESOL instructional practices.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with students, colleagues, and stakeholders.
• Ability to build rapport with adult learners and foster a supportive, inclusive learning environment that promotes student engagement, persistence, and retention.
• Ability to teach students across a range of English-language proficiency levels.
• Proficiency in using instructional technology, including Brightspace, online curriculum, and resources.
• Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive learning environment that supports the success of diverse adult learners.
• Ability to maintain accurate student records and use data related to attendance, assessment, and student progress to inform instruction.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master's degree in TESOL, Education, Applied Linguistics, or a related field.
• Bilingual Spanish/English.
• Experience teaching hybrid or online courses.
• Experience working with and supporting culturally and linguistically diverse adult learners.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

• All candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States. Northern Essex Community College does not provide employment-based visa sponsorship.
• Employment is contingent upon the successful completion and review of a background check which will include CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) and SORI (Sex Offender Registry Information).

Additional Information:

SALARY: $45/hour, Non-benefited position. Teacher is compensated for all hours worked which includes classroom instruction, prep time, professional development, meetings, and subbing.
