JOB SUMMARY

The Paramedic delivers care to patients with a varying degree of acute illness and/or injury. The care provided by the Paramedic is determined through the process of patient triaging, information gathering, and intervention under the supervision of the attending provider or a registered nurse. The Paramedic is to deliver care under their scope of practice as set forth by the State of Ohio law. The Paramedic must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on assigned unit.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Must be a High School graduate or the equivalent (GED).
• Must be a graduate of an accredited program of paramedic training.
• Must possess a current/Active certification as an EMT-Paramedic from the State of Ohio.
• Current certification in BLS, ACLS, and PALS through the American Heart Association.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Under the direction of the Provider or RN, assist with collection of assessment data of patients and provides information to patient/family.
• Documents patient information and patient care given.
• Responds as part of the team effort to emergencies.
• Recognizes cardiac dysrhythmias and performs ACLS intervention at the direction of the Provider or RN.
• Intubates patients if given direction by the Provider.
• Delivers care to patients as directed, including comfort measures, emotional/supportive care, and general information to patient questions.
• 12-lead EKG.
• Initiation of cardiac monitoring.
• Initiation of IV/IO and infusion of fluids manually or by infusion device at the physician ordered rate, or initiation of a saline lock.
• Insertion of nasogastric or orogastric tube.
• Wound preparation for suturing and suture tray preparation.
• Cleanse wounds/dress wounds with appropriate dressing materials.
• Application of commercially manufactured splint, sling, ace wrap, cock-up, air casts, soft or rigid C-collar, soft cast, knee and shoulder immobilizer, and clavicle strap.
• Initiate aerosol treatments per physician order.
• Transports patients to Inpatient areas.
• Applies oxygen by non-rebreather, mask, nasal cannula, BVM, as needed.
• Assists with application of hospital-approved restraints.
• Initiation of seizure precautions.
• Measure vital signs, including orthostatic vital signs.
• Obtain specimens for lab testing: blood (if directed by a Lab employee), urine, sputum, RSV, throat swab, wound culture, sends to lab with appropriate label.
• Fingerstick blood sugar.
• Assists with lumbar puncture.
• Visual acuity testing.
• Perform intraosseous access.
• Set up sterile equipment and supplies for procedures.
• Trauma/stroke/STEMI team member.
• Ultrasound-guided peripheral IV access if training is completed.
• Perform other duties as assigned under the direction of the provider.

Scope of Practice- State of Ohio

The Paramedic will follow their scope of practice as approved by the State Board of Medical, Fire, and Transportation Services and the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of EMS.

Working Conditions and Physical Environment

• Works in a patient care setting where there is potential exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials; and electrical, fire, chemical, physical contact and equipment hazards.
• Fast-paced setting with rapid patient turnover.
• High patient traffic.
• Close-quartered and shared workspace.
• Sufficient mobility to negotiate physical plant.
• Strength and endurance sufficient enough to perform physically for long periods of time without sitting (four to eight hours). May include walking; lifting 25 – 50lbs with or without assistance; bending; twisting; standing; sitting; reaching; stair-climbing and descending.
• Physical dexterity and psychomotor skills to respond adequately and appropriately to routine and emergency patient care needs in an ambulatory setting.
• Visual and auditory capabilities sufficient to read information and respond to patient care needs.
• Ability to work in a computerized environment that includes prolonged sitting and use of keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
• Cognitive ability to accurately observe, analyze, and interpret general and technical data both verbal and written to accurately communicate this information.
