Departmental Overview The Departments of Molecular and Cell Biology, Integrative Biology, and Neuroscience are among the largest academic departments at UC Berkeley. These departments have more than 186 faculty FTE, 140 researchers and specialists, 185 post‑doctoral researchers, 375 graduate students, and 60 staff members. Annual salaries and external funding total approximately $1350 M. Position Summary The Graduate Program Manager runs the day‑to‑day operations of the Neuroscience Graduate Program and works with faculty Program Director and other program faculty in strategic planning and implementation of new program initiatives. The role provides a comprehensive range of student and programmatic services, including academic advising, recruitment, admissions, financial aid, fellowship awards, orientation, and other special events. The manager tracks program‑related data for federal reporting, manages an annual budget of over $1.5 M, and serves as the primary liaison on all programmatic matters to campus central units. Responsibilities Provide full‑range academic advising and develop policies and procedures related to student progress, grievance resolution, and student climate reporting. Develop policies and strategies for recruitment and retention of students through financial aid programs and advise on funding for new students. Administer departmental awards, block grants, and restricted funds, ensuring compliance with regulations and timely delivery of financial aid. Coordinate recruitment and admissions, including outreach to under‑represented populations, application review, and faculty interview scheduling. Manage student orientation, enrollment, fee payments, and student data security. Provide recommendations for curriculum, admissions processes, events, and training for new graduate student orientation. Guide a full‑time staff member responsible for coordinating program events such as recruitment, orientation, thesis symposia, commencement, and GSI hiring. Support students on the Neuroscience T32 training grant, including communications and data collection for annual reporting and renewals. Required Qualifications Advanced knowledge of advising techniques and excellent customer service skills. In‑depth understanding of higher education, graduate division, and program policies related to graduate studies, financial support, and student services. Strong analytical skills and ability to devise solutions to complex problems. Interpersonal, active‑listening, negotiating, and facilitation skills. Resourceful, innovative, and flexible with excellent communication skills. Multicultural competencies and experience working with diverse constituencies. Advanced project and events development and management skills. Ability to multi‑task, prioritize, and operate in a fast‑paced environment with attention to detail. Proficiency with higher‑education‑specific computer applications and risk assessment procedures. Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience and training. Preferred Qualifications Background in neuroscience, life sciences, or psychology is a plus. Salary & Benefits The budgeted annual salary range for this position is $72,600.00 – $100,800.00.
