About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Nephrology – Med Surg Duration: 15 weeks Shift: 12H Days Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active state license required Certifications: RN license and BLS required Must-Have: - General medical-surgical background - Positive attitude - Teamwork - Dependability Description: The unit consists of 21 beds, with all private rooms except for one semi-private room. Each room is equipped with overhead lift equipment. Bedside report is required. Rounding on patients occurs every 1-2 hours. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-6 at night. Common diagnoses include End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), and patients requiring Hemodialysis or Peritoneal Dialysis. Other types of patients include those undergoing parathyroidectomies, ileal conduit creations, and transplants. Experience in general medicine is a must, and familiarity with nephrology or urology is preferred. RNs are not required to titrate drips. A charge nurse is available 24/7, typically not taking patients but may manage a small team if staffing demands it. House supervisors are also present around the clock. Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are available with a ratio of 1:10-11 during the day and night shifts. PCT duties include vital signs, baths, and activities, and they assist with certain tasks but do not titrate medications. Respiratory therapists are available for assistance when needed. Telemetry is monitored by technicians from another unit, and RNs are not required to interpret telemetry readings. Scheduling allows for flexibility, including self-scheduling options. Weekend coverage may be required, typically every other weekend for day shifts. Expectations include working every other holiday. There is no requirement for call shifts. Float assignments may occur to other general medicine units, but this is infrequent. Scrubs of any color are acceptable, with specific grooming standards in place. Unit-specific orientation will be provided, including three days with a preceptor.
