The Law Offices of Heywood G. Friedman is a premier California law firm specializing in general liability, employment law, and workers' compensation defense. Over nearly 40 years of legal practice, we have developed vibrant long-term relationships with many of California’s largest commercial insurers, private employers, and public agencies.

We are seeking an experienced Paralegal or Legal Assistant to support our firm’s Civil Litigation Practice, specializing in representing clients in a variety of civil matters including general liability, premises liability, transportation liability, personal injury, and subrogation.

Successful candidates for this position will have the choice of working remotely or in person at one of our five office locations throughout California. The expected salary range for this position is $30–$45 per hour. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors as permitted by law.

• Maintain case files and records in accordance with firm policies and procedures
• Prepare discovery requests
• Order records
• Prepare pleadings, motions (including motions to amend, motions to modify, motions for summary judgment), responses to pleadings, replies to correspondence, etc.
• Assist in trial preparation, including trial briefs, exhibit lists, witness lists, motions in limine, and oppositions thereto.
• Collaborate with attorneys and professional staff on developing and executing case strategy
• Correspond with clients, opposing counsel, vendors, expert witnesses, etc.
• Perform administrative duties such as calendaring
• Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
• Knowledge of California law and civil procedure
• Experience in drafting legal documents such as pleadings, motions, orders and forms
• Ability to interpret legal documents such as pleadings, motions, etc.
• Ability to meet deadlines and deliver highquality work product
• Excellent computer skills
• Ability to work independently or in a team setting
• Strong attention to detail
• Strong organizational skills
• Strong client communication skills
• Strong analytical/problemsolving skills
• Ability to meet billable hours quota
• Ability to work in a paperless environment
Preferred Qualifications
• Paralegal certification or an equivalent degree
• 3+ years’ experience as a Civil Litigation Paralegal or Legal Assistant
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Outlook, Word, and Excel) or WordPerfect
• Proficiency in legal practice management software (MerusCase, Tabs3, etc.)
• Familiarity with CEB Essential Forms
• Prior professional experience at a California insurance defense firm
• Proficiency in EAMS
• Proficiency in FileNet
