We are looking for an experienced Senior Accountant to join a mission-driven non-profit organization in Charleston, South Carolina. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting timely reporting cycles, and strengthening accounting operations through thoughtful analysis and process improvements. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, experience in non-profit environments, and the ability to guide team members while partnering with leadership on financial insights and compliance matters.

Responsibilities:

• Direct the monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycle to ensure financial reporting is completed accurately and on schedule.

• Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, grant reimbursement activity, and financial reports to maintain reliable accounting records.

• Oversee general ledger activity and validate account balances through thorough analysis and reconciliation work.

• Provide daily support and technical direction to accounting staff, offering feedback that promotes consistency and accuracy.

• Examine financial results and trends to inform budgeting, forecasting, and broader organizational planning.

• Maintain adherence to organizational policies, accounting standards, and applicable regulatory requirements within a non-profit setting.

• Lead initiatives that improve workflows, strengthen accounting procedures, and increase operational efficiency.

• Assess internal controls, recommend practical enhancements, and help implement updates that reduce risk and support compliance.

• Partner with finance leadership to develop management reporting, dashboards, and presentation materials for leadership.

• Contribute to the refinement of accounting policies, procedures, and systems while mentoring team members and encouraging continued growth.S

• Proven experience managing month-end close activities and maintaining general ledger accuracy.
• Strong background in preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and bank reconciliations.
• Knowledge of fund accounting within a non-profit environment.
• Familiarity with governmental accounting practices and federal grant reimbursement processes.
• Ability to analyze financial information and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
• Experience reviewing the work of other accounting professionals and providing day-to-day guidance.
• Solid understanding of internal controls, financial reporting, and compliance expectations.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to support cross-functional collaboration.
