What We Can Achieve Together The Associate Director of Development III (ADoD) for New York develops, implements, and manages effective multi-year strategies and plans for the cultivation of prospects and the solicitation of gifts, primarily from individual donors and may include some corporations and foundations. The ADoD will be joining a high performing team, raising $45 million+ annually as part of the One Future: Together We Find A Way Campaign with the goal of raising $500 million+ from the NY Global Market. The ADoD will work with development, conservation and executive leaders to help fulfill the New York Division’s ambitious revenue goals. This position will also collaborate with team members to coordinate gifts for work beyond New York (across North America and in 80+ countries around the world) as opportunities arise. The ADoD reports to the NY Director of Development (DoD) and collaborates closely with the DoD and with the NY Executive Director, both of whom are based in the New York City office. The ADoD will be part of the Development leadership team for NY and will be instrumental in elevating the fundraising and relationships across Long Island. The ADoD must live in Suffolk or Nassau counties on Long Island. We’re Looking for You The ADoD will identify and engage existing and new individual prospective donors who are affiliated or unaffiliated with The Nature Conservancy and seek to motivate them to invest in TNC’s conservation mission. They will develop qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for a portfolio of donors leveraging a local to global perspective and story, and the One Future Campaign. The ADoD will cultivate and steward prospects, donors, and networks in collaboration with TNC’s executive, conservation and fundraising leadership and with TNC’s network of committed volunteer leaders, donors, and partners. The portfolio managed by the ADoD will require sophisticated relationship management, a high degree of understanding of non‑cash assets, and an expertise in the factors influencing philanthropic giving. The position will focus on long‑range strategic priorities and be responsible for donor strategy and proposal development, working with conservation, finance, and development staff, as well as donors, to create transformational giving opportunities. This position will mobilize somewhat independently, support Division Leadership as a moves manager as appropriate, and follow the organization’s reporting and metrics processes. This position will lead small events (salons, preserve walks, etc.) to enhance donor engagement, grow brand awareness and to engage new audiences in the geography. Responsibilities & Scope Manage a portfolio of 40 – 75 donors, including donors with the capacity to give over $750,000 once the portfolio is developed. Responsible for 40 – 75 visits and 120 – 225 moves annually. Annual fundraising goal of $2,000,000+ once the portfolio has matured, along with a goal for bequest notifications. Develop qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for a portfolio of high‑net‑worth individuals interested in supporting TNC’s conservation efforts in New York, across North America, and globally. Identify potential prospects, research, and build a pipeline of new donors. Facilitate and coordinate all communication with prospective donors, developing positive relationships between TNC, the prospective donors and related organizations and individuals. Evaluate various gift opportunities and giving vehicles and recommend the most suitable approach for a particular donor at a particular point in time. Direct negotiations for complex, high‑profile or sensitive agreements. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal contacts such as conservation staff, senior leaders, development operations, finance, other fundraisers in New York and other Business Units to consult on organizational needs, to formulate strategies to promote engagement to qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective donors. Assist in the development and refinement of the strategy for, and creation of, written communications from TNC leadership in New York and of Global work, as appropriate to a donor’s particular interests. Participate in gift solicitations to fund organization‑wide priorities, in addition to specific opportunities in New York, to enhance the overall development efforts of TNC. Conceive, organize, manage and often participate in regular events and trips for prospective and current donors. Convey persuasively the mission and campaign priorities to varied groups, including major donors, corporate executives, board members and others who are important to the organization’s overall prosperity. Stay abreast of TNC priorities and accomplishments and leverage local‑to‑global storytelling in conjunction with the One Future Campaign. Financial responsibility for setting and meeting fundraising objectives, reporting on and evaluating results, aligning regularly with team goals, and developing corrective strategies. Decisions may have a program‑wide impact, affect team members, and bind the organization financially or legally. Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements; be alert to ethical compliance issues. Implement and lead multiple collaborative and complex projects, directing work of team members, managing budget, setting deadlines, and ensuring accountability. Maintain confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally charged information. Maximum opportunity to act independently; resolve complex issues within scope. May supervise staff. At times and as needed, travel on short notice, work long hours and weekends. Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain. What You’ll Bring Bachelor’s degree and 7 years related experience. Experience in cultivating and ultimately stewarding the development of a pipeline of new donors. Experience building and maintaining long‑term relationships with constituents such as major donors and foundations. Experience soliciting and closing six‑to seven‑figure gifts, including experience with planned giving. Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors. Experience working with fundraising principles and practices. Experience, comfort, and facility with databases/CRM’s. Experience, coursework, or other training in current and evolving trends in charitable giving, particularly in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts and planned giving. Ability to travel when necessary. Ability to be on the East End of Long Island regularly during the summer months and as needed throughout the off‑season. Experience working proactively and independently while seamlessly communicating with a team of colleagues across multiple time zones. Experience communicating, both verbally and via written form, to a range of audiences. Experience maintaining confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally charged information. Desired Qualifications Ability to design and implement fundraising strategies, including cultivation, solicitation and recognition strategies. Ability to determine an individual’s interests, capacity and potential for helping the Conservancy meet its goals, and act appropriately to tie those interests with the Conservancy’s work. Demonstrated experience using listening, diplomacy, and tact to build strong relationships and motivate donors and Volunteer Leaders. Attention to detail. Ability to educate and inform prospective and existing donors about appropriate giving vehicles. Advanced knowledge of complex charitable gift planning. Proven ability to negotiate complex, high‑profile or sensitive agreements. Familiarity with BBCRM or similar data management system. Interest in the environment, community wellbeing, natural resources, or science a plus. This position requires a valid driver’s license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy‑owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
