Compensation & Hours Hiring Range: $77276.00 to $125574.00 Full Time or Part Time: Full Time Job Responsibilities Provide technical advice, guidance and training regarding assigned engineering program areas; prepare analyses, reports, and recommendations based on engineering determinations; provide engineering support and consultation related to engineering program area; effectively manage assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion; and communicate with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, citizens and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs. Analysis and Technical Reporting: analyze and interpret engineering data and information, and prepare complete, clear and concise reports and recommendations. Communication: establish an effective line of communication between VDOT, contractors, government agencies and the public; investigate issues and resolve complaints. Computer and CADD: complete standard and special design tasks using appropriate design software, including MicroStation and other non-CADD applications for development and delivery of designs. Engineering Process Management: use established VDOT policies and procedures in the development and delivery of engineering projects, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Manage Assigned Activities: plan, schedule and coordinate engineering program activities so that deliverables are met within the established scope and timeline. Project Engineering: assist in the management of projects and tasks—including development of and managing the scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reports—while handling multiple concurrent tasks and assignments and reporting updates on their status. Research and Technical Assistance and Committees: conduct research and provide technical assistance to customers on a variety of standard and special design issues, especially those concerning roadside safety; serve as a member of standing committees such as the PCAV and the Roadside Safety Committee. Special Assignments: manage special program initiatives and projects as assigned; represent VDOT or assigned program area on various committees and work groups. Standard and Special Design Roadway Items: use knowledge of roadway design principles to develop and recommend standard and special design roadway items for a wide range of transportation projects; apply decision quality and problem‑solving skills to resolve complex challenges. Teamwork and Customer Service: demonstrate customer service and work habits that reflect the VDOT Values, and coordinate the flow of information both orally and in writing. Knowledge of engineering specifications and standards. Knowledge of Civil Engineering principles related to roadway design and Standard Design technical knowledge. Knowledge of VDOT, state, and federal policies and procedures relating to transportation engineering. Knowledge of basic structural design. Knowledge of project management procedures and principles. Knowledge of roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials. Skill in building networks and relations with employees from other divisions, field personnel, contractors, manufacturers and FHWA representatives. Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to internal and external customers. Skill in the use of computers and software applications, including MS Office, project management and engineering software programs. Minimum Qualifications Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to review electronic file management and survey for compliance. Experience applying roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials. Skilled in the use of computers.
