Business Correspondent, Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies

$124.98k - $190k
Full-time

The New York Times

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The New York Times is looking for a talented, experienced and versatile correspondent to join the tech pod on the Business desk to cover Elon Musk's artificial intelligence work. Musk, a founder of OpenAI, has long been invested in the technology and its implications. He is making A.I. central to SpaceX and Tesla, his two main companies, and is competing with other Silicon Valley titans in dealmaking, geopolitics, national security, and financing of the technology.

We are looking for an energetic, determined and collegial journalist who thrives when competing on the most compelling and important storylines. Proven success in building and cultivating sources and experience reporting on companies are prerequisites. You will work closely with other tech reporters in the United States and around the world. This is a high metabolism job, with breaking news, second-day stories, analysis, explainers, profiles, accountability stories and enterprise. You will collaborate across multiple desks and teams including finance, Audio, Video and Graphics. You will write articles, short Live updates, contribute to newsletters and videos and participate in collaborative reporting projects.

This is an in-office position, based in San Francisco and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • You will generate original reporting on news, events and trends on Musk and his A.I. efforts, in conjunction with your colleagues and editors, themes worthy of coverage as breaking news, day news or as enterprise.

  • You will build a network of sources that will inform rich and original reports, news and features.

  • You will write with authority, clarity, and independently.

  • You must be as comfortable and enthusiastic handling breaking news as you are writing thoughtfully and deeply about events, issues, finances and people.

  • You will write medium- and long-term enterprise and the occasional entertaining feature.

  • You will cover news accurately and efficiently; maintain and cultivate news sources and contacts; obtain information through interviews, observations and research.

  • You will present facts and analysis in clear written form and in conformity with Times style, length and other requirements, and developing high-impact stories from the broader themes that underpin incremental news developments.

  • You will write on deadline; receive and react to feedback and edits.

  • You will contribute to and sometimes be the lead correspondent on live briefings, join planning meetings and provide live coverage.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the Business Tech Editor.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of significant beat reporting and writing experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to produce stories that are crisply written and well organized, framed to draw in busy, scrolling readers and delivered in language that is accessible.

  • Experience as a collaborator and the ability to partner with colleagues across The New York Times newsroom.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A passion for professional development and the ability to learn from everyone around them.

  • A collaborative, genuine and independent spirit that takes satisfaction in not only their own growth but the success of their team and colleagues.

  • Interest in directly engaging with our audiences to deepen their relationships with The Times.

  • A willingness to be flexible as the newsroom's needs evolve.

  • A bottomless curiosity about the world and a love of news and storytelling.

  • A commitment to the power of tough and fair reporting.

To be considered for this role, please submit your resume and cover letter, including links to 5-7 clips that demonstrate your range.
