Job Description

This night-shift Diesel Technician role focuses on maintaining and repairing medium and heavy-duty trucks and related equipment, with opportunities to work on both standard and complex repairs depending on experience level. You will perform diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance on engines, transmissions, drivetrains, and critical vehicle systems while ensuring safety, reliability, and high-quality workmanship. The position offers a clear path for advancement based on performance, safety, and adherence to company standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostics and repairs on truck engines, transmissions, driveline components, and other critical systems.
• Conduct safety inspections and routine preventive maintenance on medium and heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
• Perform maintenance and repairs on a variety of equipment, including tractors, trailers, refuse vehicles, yard spotters, and construction equipment.
• Perform vehicle diagnostics on aftertreatment systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems to identify and resolve issues efficiently.
• Complete mid-level internal engine and driveline repairs independently, ensuring high-quality workmanship.
• Perform Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections in accordance with regulatory requirements.
• Prepare and maintain accurate handwritten and computer-generated work records documenting all garage and shop activities.
• Provide accurate estimates and realistic timelines for repairs, ensuring customers understand the scope of work.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with customers, drivers, and team members to explain findings, repair needs, and status updates.
• Ensure compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and applicable legal regulations at all times.
• Develop and maintain strong customer relationships by providing responsive, reliable, and courteous service.
• Uphold the company’s purpose and core values in daily work and interactions.
• Mentor and support less-experienced technicians when needed, sharing knowledge and promoting best practices.
• Meet or exceed efficiency targets and quality standards, contributing to overall shop performance.

Essential Skills

• State of Michigan Medium/Heavy Duty Mechanic Certifications or 1–2 years of experience in truck repair for entry-level to mid-level technician work.
• 2–4 years of experience as a truck technician or equivalent for advanced technician responsibilities.
• Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot engines, transmissions, aftertreatment systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail when identifying and resolving mechanical and electrical issues.
• State of Michigan Medium/Heavy Duty Mechanic Certification – Brake.
• State of Michigan Master Certified Medium/Heavy Duty Mechanic status for advanced technician responsibilities.
• Valid CDL-A license to support test drives and movement of equipment as required.
• Section 609 EPA Refrigerant Handling Certification to work on air conditioning and related systems.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and safety.
• Commitment to meeting or exceeding efficiency targets and maintaining high-quality standards.
• Consistent adherence to safety practices, with no safety incidents over a 12-month period as a prerequisite for advancement.
• Ability to follow and remain in compliance with all handbook rules and company policies for at least 12 months as part of advancement criteria.
• Completion of all mandatory safety training as required by the company.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in diesel repair, which may come from military service, commercial repair shops, or similar environments.
• Mechanical aptitude, including experience tinkering with vehicles, replacing brakes, and using hand tools.
• At least 1 year of preventive maintenance experience, such as performing grease jobs, changing filters, and changing oil on cars or semi-trucks.
• Motor rebuild experience, particularly with diesel engines, to support complex engine work.
• ASE certification in relevant areas of diesel or truck repair.
• State mechanic license beyond the required certifications, which enhances versatility and credibility.
• At least 3 years of semi-truck experience to help fill skill gaps and strengthen the team’s depth of expertise.
• Experience in heavy equipment repair, including construction or off-road equipment.
• Willingness to work an 8-hour shift within a flexible window between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., with the ability to take on overtime when available, even though overtime is not required.
• Strong communication skills to interact effectively with customers, drivers, and team members.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain quality work with no comebacks related to workmanship over a 12-month period as part of advancement criteria.

Work Environment

The role is based in a shop environment that services medium and heavy-duty trucks and equipment, including tractors, trailers, refuse vehicles, yard spotters, and construction equipment. The facility features open bays that help keep the shop cooler in the summer and is fully climate controlled, with air conditioning available in warm weather and heat during colder months, creating a comfortable work setting throughout the year. Technicians regularly use diagnostic tools, computerized systems, and standard mechanical equipment to perform inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance. The position is scheduled on nights, and overall shift flexibility typically falls within an 8-hour day between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., with opportunities for overtime when desired but not required. The environment emphasizes safety, adherence to procedures, and high-quality workmanship, with clear expectations around efficiency and incident-free performance. Attire is typical of a professional diesel shop setting, where technicians wear appropriate work clothing and safety gear suitable for hands-on mechanical and diagnostic tasks.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Battle Creek, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr.
