Description: The Assistant High School Principal assists the Principal in the overall administration and operation of the high school. This position supports instructional leadership, student discipline, staff supervision, school safety, and the implementation of educational programs. The Assistant Principal assumes responsibility for school operations in the Principal's absence.

Essential Functions:

Leadership and School Administration
  • Assist the Principal in the overall administration, operation, and continuous improvement of the school.
  • Assume administrative responsibility for the school in the absence of the Principal.
  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of school programs, initiatives, and improvement plans.
  • Assist in the development and coordination of the master schedule and other operational planning activities.
  • Supervise alternative education programs and other student support initiatives.
  • Complete and submit required reports, records, and documentation in a timely manner.
Student Management and Supervision
  • Monitor and enforce attendance, behavior, and disciplinary policies while ensuring students' due process rights are protected.
  • Confer with students, parents, and staff regarding academic, attendance, behavioral, and disciplinary concerns.
  • Provide supervision of students throughout the school day, including arrival and dismissal, lunch periods, assemblies, extracurricular activities, and other school-sponsored events.
  • Serve as a positive role model and promote high expectations for student conduct and achievement.
Staff Supervision and Instructional Support
  • Assist in the supervision and evaluation of certified and classified staff.
  • Provide leadership and support to teachers, secretaries, custodial staff, paraprofessionals, food service personnel, and other assigned employees.
  • Monitor instructional effectiveness through classroom observations, lesson plan review, and collaboration with staff.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and professional work environment.
School Safety and Compliance
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring school safety plans, emergency procedures, and crisis response protocols.
  • Coordinate and supervise fire drills, tornado drills, lockdowns, and other emergency preparedness activities.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies, state regulations, and applicable laws.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student, personnel, medical, and legal records and information.
Communication and Community Relations
  • Establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with students, staff, parents, community members, and the public.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally in both oral and written formats.
  • Respond to questions, concerns, and requests with tact, diplomacy, and sound judgment.
  • Promote positive public relations through professional conduct, appearance, and communication.
  • Participate in parent, faculty, student, and community organizations as assigned.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Attend and participate in meetings, professional development activities, athletic events, school functions, and other assigned programs.
  • Assist with the planning and coordination of special events and activities during the school day.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, Assistant Superintendent, or Superintendent.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful educational experience.
  • Valid Ohio Administrator License or appropriate Ohio administrative certification.
  • Alternative qualifications may be considered as approved by the Superintendent and Board of Education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Ohio school law, educational regulations, and best practices.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and support staff and students.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective decision-making and conflict-resolution abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Working Conditions
  • Frequent evening and weekend responsibilities, with occasional summer work.

  • Occasional interaction with disruptive or unruly students.
  • Occasional operation of a motor vehicle in adverse weather conditions.
  • Frequent use of computers and repetitive hand movements.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, stoop, hear, speak, and perform other physical activities associated with school administration.

The Garfield Heights City Schools collaboratively and cooperatively serve students and families of the City of Garfield Heights. Located in Cuyahoga County and bordered on the north by the City of Cleveland proper, and on all other sides by the first ring communities of Northeast Ohio. Our District proudly serves approximately 3,500 students in three Kindergarten through Grade 5 schools, one middle school, and one high school. The Garfield Heights City School prides itself on providing a rigorous and comprehensive pre-k through 12th-grade educational curriculum that clearly focuses on student success through college and career readiness. To that end, Garfield Heights High School offers a variety of Advanced Placement courses, including AP English, AP Government, AP American History, Honors Chemistry, Honors Calculus, Honors Physical Science, and more. While the District offers these high-level academic courses, the GHCS also proudly sends more than 225 students on an annual basis to the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center for those individuals deeply interested in learning a skilled profession or hands-on expertise in one of the trades. Middle School students have increasingly greater opportunities to prepare themselves for high school and parents are readily encouraged to be involved. Elementary School students in the GHCS also participate in such valuable literacy programs as LETRs and social/emotional initiatives as the Zones of Regulation. The GHCS places a great deal of emphasis at all levels of education on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (P.B.I.S.) and each school has won awards from the State of Ohio for encouraging and promoting positive behavior.

A wide variety of co-curricular offerings are available to students of all ages in the Garfield Heights City Schools as well. Such opportunities include more than 18 varsity sports, the district's show choir, Music Express, Marching Band, Theater, A Capella Choir, National Honor Society, Student Council, Glass Ceiling, Future Engineers, and more. These co-curricular offerings are award-winning on the state, regional and local levels. Students can expect success when they become involved in the various academic, co-curricular, and student leadership organizations in this District.
