Bus Technician

Job Title Bus Technician FLSA Classification Non-exempt, hourly employee. Work Days 261 days (including paid holidays and paid vacation time). Standard Hours Per Day 8 hours per day (not including a 60‑minute unpaid duty‑free meal break). Mandatory overtime, especially during the winter months, is highly likely. Work Year The standard work year for the Technician begins on the first weekday in July, and ends 12 months later on the last weekday in June. Salary Schedule & Benefits The Technician is paid on the “Vehicle Maintenance” salary schedule, and is eligible for benefits on the “Support Staff” benefits schedule. Reports To The Technician reports to the Garage Supervisor. Both the Technician and the Garage Supervisor report to the Director of Transportation. Supervises The Technician does not supervise any other employee(s). General Summary of Duties Under general direction, the Technician is responsible for efficiently and effectively repairing and maintaining the school buses, trucks, and other vehicles and equipment owned by the district to extend the service life of each item. The Technician performs basic to semi‑skilled mechanical service and repair work to diesel, propane, and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment, and is responsible for inspecting tasks upon completion to ensure compliance with technical specifications and principles of safe vehicle operation. All work is to be done in a safe and timely manner in accordance with industry standards. Performs related work as directed. Essential Functions Performs basic to semi‑skilled vehicle and equipment repair; performs routine troubleshooting in identifying malfunctions or failures. Performs preventive maintenance according to assigned schedules as needed, i.e., changing oil, tires, transmission fluid, tune‑ups, filter and belt replacement. Utilizes computerized diagnostic and manual test methods in identifying service, replacement and vehicle/equipment repair needs. Repairs or replaces damaged or missing parts and components, i.e., mirrors, glass, windshields, windows, doors, wipers. Performs service and repair on various automotive and mechanical equipment, i.e., mufflers, water hoses, starters, brakes, tires, plugs, radiators, cylinders, horns, wheelchair lifts. Diagnoses, repairs, and/or replaces electrical/electronic control systems, cooling systems, transmissions, starting and charging systems. Determines feasibility for on‑site repair and performs such accordingly, or refers major and/or complex service requirements to the Garage Supervisor. Road tests vehicles to ascertain repair effectiveness; performs final inspection upon completion of service/repair prior to release. Responds to road emergencies and performs any necessary repairs; ensures the availability of necessary tools, parts and supplies. Maintains work order records concerning diagnosis, repair/service performed, and parts and supplies used. Performs inspection duties in evaluating vehicle conditions for roadworthiness, and in responding to concerns regarding defects or non‑conformance with the Department of Transportation and other pertinent regulatory standards. Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by Warren. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position. Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities. Maintain a clean and safe working environment. Non‑Essential Functions While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members. Performs related duties as directed. Entry‑Level Requirements Education/Training: High school diploma or GED is required; additional training and experience in basic automotive or small equipment repair, and demonstrating mechanical aptitude are preferred. Experience: At least 1 year of progressively skilled repair experience, the majority of which shall include vehicle maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is required. Level of experience will be determined by the Township. Certifications: No certifications required for this position. Licenses: Must obtain and maintain a valid Indiana commercial driver’s license class “B” with passenger and school bus endorsements. MSD Warren supports this process if candidate does not have a class “B” with passenger and school bus endorsements. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives. Situational Reasoning: Requires ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria. Physical Requirements Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of heavy physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. These tasks may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) and occasionally heavier items (100 pounds or over). Tasks involve long periods of standing and working with arms above shoulder level. Sensory Requirements Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors.
