Long-Term Care Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
A Long-Term Care Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) plays a critical role in providing daily care to elderly or disabled residents in a long-term care facility. The CNA works under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and is responsible for assisting with personal care, daily activities, and ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for residents. The role also includes assisting residents with eating, grooming, and hygiene.
Key Responsibilities:
- Personal Care Assistance: Assist residents with daily personal care, including bathing, dressing, grooming, oral hygiene, and toileting.
- Mobility Support: Help residents with mobility issues, including transferring from bed to chair, using a walker or wheelchair, and assisting with walking.
- Monitoring and Reporting: Observe residents' health and report any significant changes in condition to the nurse or healthcare provider.
- Vital Signs Monitoring: Take and record vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiratory rate.
- Feeding Assistance: Aid residents who require assistance with eating, including providing meals, ensuring proper nutrition, and feeding as needed.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of care provided, including daily logs and medication reminders.
- Comfort and Emotional Support: Provide companionship and emotional support to residents to ensure their comfort and well-being.
- Hygiene and Cleanliness: Ensure that the environment is safe, clean, and free from hazards; assist with cleaning and sanitizing equipment and patient areas.
- Infection Control: Follow protocols for infection control, including hand hygiene and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Required Qualifications:
- Certification: Must have an active CNA certification from an accredited program.
- Experience: Previous experience in long-term care settings or related healthcare fields preferred, but not always required.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift, move, and transfer residents, as well as stand for extended periods.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to follow instructions and accurately document care.
- Compassion: A caring and compassionate attitude toward residents, understanding their physical, emotional, and mental health needs.
States Requiring CNA Certification or Licensure:
CNA certification or licensure requirements vary by state in the U.S. The following states generally require CNAs to be certified and hold active licenses:
- California
- Florida
- Texas
- New York
- Illinois
- Ohio
- Michigan
- Pennsylvania
- Georgia
- North Carolina
- Virginia

- Pass a Competency Exam – This includes both a written test and a practical skills assessment.
- Maintain Certification – Most states require CNAs to complete continuing education and renew their certifications periodically. Check with the state's health department or nursing board for specific certification and licensing requirements.
