Assistant General Counsel

ABOUT THE ROLE

Are you a service‑mindful attorney with solid technical expertise in construction and contract drafting and negotiating? Do you want to better understand the business considerations that inform risk management decisions? If the answer is “Yes!” we invite you to join our dynamic in‑house legal team in the Chicago‑area, IL offices.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Review, draft, negotiate, and manage a high volume of construction and commercial agreements, primarily supporting Tenant Solutions and affiliated companies in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment. Collaborate closely with other legal team members across the United States to implement enterprise‑wide, accepted approaches to contract and risk management. Work with project managers and leaders to understand business objectives when negotiating agreements. Advise and collaborate with safety, finance, IT, and HR teams. Maintain, coordinate, and manage all documentation related to construction contracts and day‑to‑day construction project operations. Prepare and present training to non‑legal business operators on legal and legal‑adjacent issues in the construction industry. Assess and mitigate ARCO’s risk and provide suggestions to General Counsel and business leadership. Maintain and grow relationships with vendors and title companies. Assist Operations and Leadership in problem‑solving and risk management. Manage communications and deliverables in a deadline‑driven environment. Work well with, and efficiently direct the work of, shared paralegal support.

QUALIFICATIONS

Licensed attorney with 5+ years of experience in or closely working with construction organizations or firms. Current experience managing a substantial volume of contract review, drafting, and negotiation, preferably with day‑to‑day transactional work. Experience leading negotiations of construction contracts with sophisticated counterparties and an ability to understand the Owner, Subcontractor, and/or Contractor’s points of view. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills to identify legal issues and risks, analyze complex problems, and provide practical, effective solutions. Demonstrated ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders. Flexible, with excellent timely written and verbal communication skills. Able to lead and follow with equal ease, based on circumstances. Desire to work as part of a highly collaborative legal team. Active listener with a proactive leadership approach, collaborative and communicative. Enjoy working in an office, fast‑paced, growth‑oriented business environment. Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
