Overview External Loan Officer – Mortgage Banking. California. What the Role Involves The external mortgage loan officer originates residential mortgage loans by developing business relationships with real estate professionals, builders, financial planners, and other potential referral sources. The role involves working outside the office to generate leads and establish a network of clients, guiding them through the mortgage application process and ensuring they find the best loan products to meet their financial needs. All mortgage loan applications and documentation must comply with applicable federal, state, and CNB regulations. Responsibilities Proactively identify and engage potential borrowers through networking, referrals, and community involvement. Establish and maintain relationships with real estate agents, builders, financial planners, and other referral sources. Use consultative sales skills to identify client needs and present appropriate loan products. Conduct regular market visits and meetings with referral partners to build a strong referral base. Attend industry events, open houses, and community events to generate new business opportunities. Consult with potential borrowers to assess financial situation and mortgage needs, educating clients on available products, interest rates, terms, and costs. Identify business opportunities and solicit referrals for other bank products or services. Assist clients in completing mortgage loan applications and gathering necessary documentation. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and CNB regulations, maintaining accurate records of all client interactions and loan applications. Negotiate transactions, price loan products within target returns, and coordinate documentation and closing of loan transactions. Coordinate cross‑selling of other products or services as required. Obtain and complete mortgage loan application packages, ensuring regulatory compliance and timely processing. Contact borrowers for additional information and exercise sound credit and risk judgment. Maintain understanding of the bank’s credit products, policies, and procedures. Participate in development of marketing strategies and sales objectives consistent with company goals. Effectively manage a daily pipeline of loans. Represent the bank in civic, community, business, and industry organizations. Comply with all operational and credit policies and regulatory requirements. Perform additional duties as assigned. Must‑Have Qualifications High school diploma. Minimum of 3 years mortgage lending experience. Minimum of 3 years business development or direct sales experience. Good standing under the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008 (Safe Act) and registration with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry, or the ability to be registered under the Safe Act. Skills and Knowledge Bachelor’s degree highly preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to prioritize and plan work activities. Ability to complete work promptly and increase productivity. Ability to work well under pressure. Strong research and analytical skills. Discretion when handling sensitive personal information. Ability to multitask and manage deadlines. Compensation This is a commission‑based role and does not have a set salary range.
