Wage Range: $31.80 - $53.53 per hour. The amounts listed are the base pay range; additional compensation, such as shift differentials and premiums may be available for this role. EvergreenHealth Monroe, a small community hospital seeks a Surgical Technologist to help provide staffing coverage in our Surgical Services department which includes 3 OR Suites, 2 Procedure Rooms and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) seeing primarily orthopedic and general surgery cases. This is a day shift position, working 8-hour shifts with minimal standby and on-call rotation requirements, which will be further clarified for candidates during the interview process.

JOB SUMMARY: Adheres to VGH Policies and Procedures. Consistently exhibits professional conduct that is a behavior-based expression of the hospital’s Standards of Excellence. Assists nursing and surgical staff with direct patient care activities. Assumes responsibility for assembling the supplies needed for the case and providing technical assistance in the operating room. Assists in the delivery of quality patient care through utilization of technical skills. Performs technical duties relating to scrub personnel, including smooth, precise, and efficient reaction to all situations, and assists with departmental work as assigned. Participates in departmental staff meeting and educational offerings. Participates in unit QI activities. Knows the legal limitations relating to the role of operating room technologist and acts accordingly. Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient's age specific needs and provide age specific treatment and care.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

High school graduate and completion of an ORT program with one year clinical experience as an ORT, or previous experience as an ORT with on-the-job training documented to the hospital’s satisfaction. Certification by the Association of Surgery Technologists required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Washington State Surgical Technologist (ST) license required.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge in the use of and cleaning/sterilization/disinfection of equipment and instrumentation utilized in the clinical operating room setting. Ability to organize supplies utilized for each surgical procedure both routine and emergent.

WORK ENVIRONMENT /HAZRDS AND COMPLIANCE:

Adheres to all State and Federal regulations pertaining to hazardous materials. Hazards include risk of exposure to communicable disease, and risk of physical injury from lifting patients and operation of equipment. Complies with manager’s instructions and hospital policies regarding reporting injuries and hazards/hazardous conditions and attends safety training as required. Works in a safe manner at all times by using appropriate protective equipment and maintains personal protective equipment as instructed. Participates in health and safety initiatives.

WORK CONTACT GROUP: All hospital departments, patients, families, visitors, nursing personnel and medical staff.

SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Must be able to assist in moving patients. Must be able to lift instrument trays and equipment we­ig­hing 10-50 pounds. Must possess visual, touch and manual dexterity. Must be able to communicate in the English language.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Performs scrubbing, gowning, gloving and draping techniques as delin­eated in hospital policy and procedure; maintains a clean and orderly work area when performing the scrub role.

• Hands surgical instruments and supplies to the surgeon and the assis­tant intraoperatively so that the surgical team's attention remains on the operative field; anticipates the needs of the surgical team throughout the surgical procedure.

• Obtains and checks necessary supplies, instruments and equipment nee­ded to meet patient and surgeon intra-operative needs, ensur­ing availability and function, but maintains accountability. Accepts room and surgery assignments without complaint.

• Applies knowledge of surgical asepsis when arranging and opening ste­rile surgical packs, instruments, trays and selected supplies; moni­tors maintenance of aseptic technique of the surgical team both pre­op­eratively and intraoperatively (i.e., visually checks steriliza­tion indicators, package integrity, expiration date and monitors for breaks in aseptic technique by the surgical team).

• Sets up operating table, mayo and instruments appropriately for the operative procedure to be performed In a timely manner to decrease surgery delays and inconvenience for patient or staff. Labels all medications on their back table, including saline and water.

• Prepares surgical specimens for laboratory analysis according to es­tablished procedure. Able to give relief during a case for breaks, lunch or change of shift with minimal disturbance, giving a complete report of counts, medicines and other pertinent information.

• Tallies the number and reports the location of drains, implants, grafts, etc., inserted intraoperatively; ensures that the circulator has all necessary information for documentation on the OR record.

• Reports adverse or unexpected developments to the surgeon and depart­mental management.

• Performs sharp, sponge and instrument counts according to hospital policy and procedure.

• Performs duties of the surgical assistant as directed by departmental management under the supervision of the attending surgeon.

• Assists in the application of sterile surgical dressings, immobilize­rs and casts as ordered by the surgeon; maintains aseptic techniques and adheres to hospital policy ad procedure regarding infection con­trol practices and universal precautions.

• Assists the team in room turnover, restocks surgical supplies, and returns equipment to proper storage area following the surgical pro­ce­dure. Helps in other rooms when not busy.

• Provided or assists with education and orientation of new and existing staff members and students.

• Ensures patient and staff safety through preventive measures (i.e. transfer to OR bed, use of patient safety devices, attention to the development of potential hazards, adherence to electrical safety tec­hniques, etc.) and implementation of hospital and departmental policy and procedure.

• Participates in the implementation and promotion of new policy and procedure; supports and actively seeks change to improve patient care routines and departmental function.

• Communicates pertinent information: surgeon requests, changes in surgeon preferences, potential safety hazards, patient care concerns, to circulating RN or nurse manager.

• Participates in Verbal Time Out, site verification, Laterality and X-ray verification.

• Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient's age specific needs and provide age specific treatment and care.

• Participates in in-service and educational programs, attends departmental staff meetings. Completes education competencies in a timely manner.
