Athletic Trainer

Position Overview This position is located in the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Organizational Cultural and Wellness Bureau (OCWB), Metropolitan Police Academy (MPA), Cadet Corps Branch. The Athletic Trainer provides a full range of athletic training to MPD and MPA employees and other health-related activities as assigned. Responsibilities Administration and operation of the Injury Care and Prevention Program of MPD and MPA. Perform prevention, recognition, evaluation and treatment of injuries/conditions related to athletic or work‑related training activities. Design rehabilitative programs utilizing various modalities and prescriptive exercise; administer various types of modalities and prescriptive exercises. Maintain inventory, resupply, maintenance and replacement of clinic equipment and materials. Work in coordination with Police and Fire Clinic Staff, Physical Training Staff, and other safety and health related positions. Develop and administer physical performance tests. Consult with physicians regarding abnormal results requiring physician intervention. Communicate with Risk Management claims managers and insurance adjusters on the status of work‑related injuries. Ensure current, accurate and complete evaluation and treatment records. Maintain medical records, injury reports and progress in accordance with MPD and MPA policies. Develop and distribute annual reports of fiscal responsibility and program development. Communicate with MPA supervisors, MPD employee supervisors on status of employees as needed. Communicate with treating physicians on patient progress notes, email, telephone calls; refer employees to other healthcare providers as needed. Communicate with nurses and case managers as applicable for each employee; assure compliance with individual treatment protocol. Maintain ethical and professional standards of practice. Assist Physical Skills Unit Supervisors and physical training staff in the development and implementation of the physical training program. Develop and present training and educational materials and programs to employees. Maintain Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers (BOC) Certification and stay current through annual attendance of approved continuing education. Ensure clinical practice is in compliance with Washington D.C. Law. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position (e.g., Exercise Science, Athletic Training or related field). Degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. License, Certifications, and Other Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid District of Columbia driver’s license or equivalent and a certification by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers (BOC). Additional preferred certifications include National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or National Academy of Sports Medicine Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) or Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), Functional Movement, National Athletic Training Association (NATA), and CPR. Work Experience At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS‑09 grade level in the District of Columbia government or its non‑District equivalent, gained from the private or public sector. Work Environment Work is performed in an office, clinic, classroom setting, fitness center, and outdoors. Instructional duties can expose the incumbent to possible strains when lifting injured or when treating injured participants, possible contagious diseases, and contact with blood and body fluids. All safety regulations, policies and procedures must be adhered to. Physical Demands Assist with or transfer individuals of various weights/heights; lift up to 50 lbs, sit for periods of time in meetings, reach, bend, stoop, squat, kneel and grip to administer employee care and perform necessary tasks; stand for long periods, good mobility, and ability to walk distances. Other Significant Factors Promotion Potential No known promotion potential. Collective Bargaining Unit This is a union position and is covered under the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE) bargaining unit. Agency fees may be paid through direct payroll deductions. Position Designation Position considered essential per DPM Chapter 12. An essential employee is always required to report to or remain at work during a declared emergency. Position Suitability Position deemed “Safety Sensitive” pursuant to Chapter 4 of the D.C. Personnel Regulations, in addition to general suitability screening and criminal background check. Candidates may be subject to traffic record check, pre‑employment drug and alcohol test, consumer credit check, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and post-accident or incident drug and alcohol tests. Residency Preference Applicants claiming residency preference must maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure may result in forfeiture of employment.
