Environmental Health Specialist 1, 2, or 3

Job Overview As an Environmental Health Specialist at the Monroe County Health Department, you will support public health initiatives by inspecting and permitting facilities, providing environmental education, investigating complaints, and ensuring compliance with state regulations. Job Responsibilities Interpret regulatory issues, analyze technical data, and document compliance. Conduct inspections, interviews, technical reviews, and recommend enforcement actions. Plan and conduct facility audits and inspections for Food Service, Public Swimming Pools, Tourist Accommodations, and Body Art. Prepare sampling plans and collect samples following established procedures. Provide information to the public, regulated communities, and enforcement officers regarding environmental laws and regulations. Respond to environmental emergencies and perform safety evaluations. Review permit applications, draft, modify, and issue permits in accordance with rules and procedures. Review permit requirements to ensure compliance with state and federal environmental laws. Perform additional duties as assigned; responsibilities may change to meet organizational needs. Minimum Qualifications Environmental Health Specialist 1 – Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 27 semester hours (or 40 quarter hours) in laboratory sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics). Environmental Health Specialist 2 – Bachelor’s degree with the same laboratory science requirement plus one year of experience at the lower level Specialist 1 (RCP120) or an equivalent position. Environmental Health Specialist 3 – Bachelor’s degree with the same laboratory science requirement plus one year of experience at the lower level Specialist 2 (RCP121) or an equivalent position. Salary depends on relevant DPH Environmental Health experience, educational achievements, and credentials. Preferred Qualifications Completion of all required Georgia Department of Public Health Environmental Health training programs. Current Georgia Environmental Health Inspector certifications, including Level I and applicable specialty certifications. Current Georgia Standardized Food Service Establishment Inspection Officer credential. Current Food Safety Manager and nationally recognized swimming pool operator certifications. Current certifications in Bloodborne Pathogens, First Aid, CPR, and FEMA IS-100. Certified Healthy Homes Specialist and Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) credentials.
