GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

For the Library’s youngest customers and their caregivers, plan and present diverse and innovative programs; provide reference and reader’s advisory services; and select and maintain collection materials. The Youth Services Librarian is a dynamic and multifaceted position that requires a blend of library management, customer service, programming, outreach, and collection development expertise. The Youth Services Librarian will work collaboratively with library staff, school personnel, and community organizations to support the library’s mission of fostering a love of reading and learning while meeting the diverse needs of youth patrons.

  • Coordinate, plan, and execute engaging programs for children and teens, including story times, craft activities, STEM programs, book clubs, and summer reading events. Ensure that programs cater to the diverse interests and developmental stages of youth patrons.
  • Provide exemplary customer service by assisting youth patrons and their caregivers, offering guidance on library services, technology, and resources. Ensure that library spaces for children and teens are welcoming, accessible, and conducive to learning.
  • Establish liaison and perform outreach activities with organizations, agencies, daycares, and schools in the community to promote library services.
  • Participate in the grant writing process to help supplement the library funds. Manage grant projects as assigned.
  • Collaborate with other library departments and staff to ensure seamless operations. Assist with the training and mentoring of part-time or volunteer staff, interns, or students in the Youth Services Department.
  • Represent the library on children's services committees and serves as the authority on children's service. Perform related work as required.
  • Track and report on the outcomes of youth programs, including attendance, feedback, and program effectiveness. Prepare monthly and annual reports summarizing activities, achievements, and future goals for Youth Services.
  • Receive and respond to inquiries and concerns regarding children's and youth programs, services, and materials.
  • Meet with members of the library and others to coordinate activities and exchange information. Communicate regularly with the Library Director and, as required, to the Friends of the Library and the Library Board of Trustees.
  • Assist in drafting children's library service policy, as assigned.
  • Assist with maintaining the physical and organizational appearance of the library. Ensure that the children’s and teen areas are orderly, clean, and inviting. Regularly assess and improve the layout and presentation of materials.
  • Essential Job Duties are intended to be examples of duties and are not intended to be all inclusive. There will be other duties as assigned.

Additional Duties Include:

Perform routine circulation duties such as registering patrons for library cards, charging, discharging, routing, changing status, and placing requests against materials. Assist patrons with public copy machines, and computers. Assist patrons by answering directional and procedural inquiries. Required to work nights and weekends. Attend relevant continuing education classes and workshops, prepare monthly reports of activities for the Library Director, and attend monthly staff meetings. May act as a member of the library’s core interview group, and may perform basic duties in other areas of the library or outreach locations as needed. Maintain memberships in professional and regional library associations and assist in providing training to staff for the continued developments affecting libraries.

Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public library functions.
  • Considerable knowledge of the needs and abilities of children and young adults and the available library materials and services.
  • Good knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration as applied to a major library service.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Good managerial and supervisory skills.
  • Considerable skills in making decisions and developing programs.
  • Good interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Knowledge in the use of computers and software programs.
  • Ability to retain a valid S.C. driver’s license.
  • Extensive skills in operating library essential tools and equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master's Degree in Library Science or Education, and three (3) years of related work experience; Education may be substituted for experience, but experience may not be substituted for education.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

Required: None.

Preferred: Professional Librarian Certificate

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

This position has the following special vision requirements: close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down and to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point); depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a relatively safe and secure indoor work environment; may encounter noise, dust, or poor ventilation.
