POSITION TITLE Assistant Football Coach SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT Assigned school / Assigned sport SALARY Per the appropriate salary schedule FLSA STATUS Exempt REPORTS TO Head Coach, Athletic Director SUPERVISES None WORK WEEK SCHEDULE Monday – Friday; evenings and some weekends WORK HOURS As dictated by the sport and season NUMBER OF MONTHS PER YEAR As dictated by the sport and season POSITION PURPOSE: The Assistant Coach is responsible for providing coaching guidance to student‑athletes related to a particular sport for the duration of the sports season. As part of the Athletic Program at the assigned school, the Assistant Coach teaches and models good sportsmanship behaviors, appropriate techniques and skills related to the specific sport, ensures safe practices to protect students from injuries, and serves as a good role model for the students, the school, and the school system. Knowledge of Position Thorough knowledge of the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques associated with the athletic program. Thorough knowledge of state and federal requirements regarding physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility for athletic participation. Thorough knowledge of training rules and any other regulations about the various sports in which athletes are engaged. Thorough knowledge of guidance and safeguards in place for athlete safety to address medical injuries and emergencies. Thorough knowledge of the process for initiating policies and procedures applicable to the athletic program. Education, Training, and Experience High School Diploma or GED. Additional coursework and/or training in a particular sport. Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Preferred Qualifications Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Physical Education or a related field. Minimum of three (3) years of coaching experience at the middle or high school level. NC Certification as Teacher, preferably in Physical Education. Certification and License Requirements Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Implement, interpret, and enforce consistently existing school system, state, and conference regulations. Refer all requests for grievances through proper channels. Attend all public, staff, and departmental meetings when required. Maintain discipline and work to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program. Assist the Head Coach with scheduling and providing transportation to tournaments and special sports events. Assist in preparing to hold scheduled sports events or practices and adhere to facility times. Assist sporting events and practices with maintenance and school employees. Assist with safeguarding and protecting assigned equipment sites. Assist athletes with training rules and any other regulations of the sport. Attend all practices and games. Provide assistance, guidance, and safety for each participant while traveling. Assist in directing student managers and statisticians on the team. Assist the Head Coach in determining discipline and due process, and contacting parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. Accountable to the Head Coach for all equipment and responsible for cost recovery of lost or not returned equipment. Assist with issuing and storing equipment and submit annual inventory to the Head Coach. Recommend program area budgetary items for subsequent years to the Head Coach. Assist with monitoring and authorizing entrance to equipment rooms and coaches’ offices. Inspect locker rooms for cleanliness before and after practices and games. Assist with upkeep and regular care of facilities and fields. Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of specific sports equipment. Secure doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty. Instill respect for teammates, equipment, and school property. Carry out the Head Coach’s responsibilities as directed. Instruct the team on rule changes and fundamentals as outlined by the Head Coach. Maintain a record of team statistics and lettering requirements. Work within the Head Coach’s philosophy of the sport. Attend staff meetings and carry out scouting assignments as outlined by the Head Coach. Arrive early enough before practice, contests, and meetings to prepare and remain afterward to assist players. Assist with the planning and implementation of in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs. Strive to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the Head Coach. Attend most contests of other teams in the program when possible. Working Conditions Physical Demands Depending on the sport, work may be considered light to heavy and require exertion of up to 100 pounds of force. The position may require prolonged standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, pushing, pulling, and running. Work Environment Employees are required to work in indoor and outdoor environments with possible exposure to excessive heat and cold and direct contact with OCS staff, students, and the public.
