Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ED RN) - Travel Assignment

We are seeking an experienced Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ED RN) for a travel assignment at a busy teaching hospital located just outside Chicago. This opportunity is ideal for nurses who thrive in a fast-paced emergency care environment and are passionate about delivering exceptional patient care across all age groups.

Emergency Department Overview

• 24-Bed Emergency Department
• Diverse patient population from neonates through geriatrics
• Collaborative multidisciplinary care team
• Fast-paced environment with a broad range of emergency presentations

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of recent Emergency Department experience required
• Minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience preferred
• First-time travelers accepted with at least 2 years of ED experience

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

The Emergency Department treats a wide variety of conditions, including:

• Minor Trauma and Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVAs)
• Sepsis
• COVID-19
• STEMI
• Stroke
• Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
• Mental Health Emergencies
• Respiratory Distress and Shortness of Breath
• Cardiac Conditions and Chest Pain
• Neurological Emergencies
• Altered Mental Status (AMS)

Travel nurses are not expected to work in the triage area.

Patient Ratios

• RN Ratio: Typically 1:4-5
• Fifth patient is generally lower acuity and requires minimal resources during surge periods

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• PALS Preferred

Required Skills

Candidates should be proficient in:

• Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation
• Intravenous (IV) Access and Therapy
• Emergency Medication Administration
• Basic ED Drip Management
• EKG Acquisition and Interpretation Support
• Rapid Assessment and Prioritization Skills

Department Support

• Charge Nurse Coverage
• Respiratory Therapy (RRT)
• Emergency Department Technicians (approximately 1:10-12 ratio)
• Hospitalists
• Phlebotomy Support for Difficult Venous Access

Technology & Equipment

• EMR: EPIC (preferred experience)
• IV Pumps: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
• Patient Monitoring:
  • Bedside Monitors
  • Central Monitoring Station

Floating

• No floating required

Orientation

• New Employee Orientation (NEO)
• EMR access and facility onboarding modules
• 1-2 unit-specific orientation shifts

Scheduling Information

• Variable shift start times based on department needs
• Every other weekend requirement
• No on-call responsibilities
• Schedule provided in 4-week increments
• Posted 1-2 weeks before schedule start date
• No self-scheduling available
• Candidates must be flexible with scheduling requirements
• Block scheduling cannot be accommodated

Holiday Requirements

Summer Holidays:

• Work 2 of the following:
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day (July 4th)
  • Labor Day

Winter Holidays:

• Work one holiday from each group:
  • Thanksgiving Day OR Day After Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Eve OR Christmas Day
  • New Year's Eve OR New Year's Day

Requested Time Off (RTO)

• Up to 7 days may be approved
