Executive Minister / Director
Park Street Church)
Executive Minister / Director, Park Street Church, Boston, Massachusetts Park Street Church ("PSC"), founded in 1809, is a historic, evangelical, congregational church in downtown Boston with a rich history of global mission. We are a diverse community of people whose mission is to make disciples of Jesus who become like him together. We believe and are united by the good news that Jesus is Lord. Our common life together is fueled by the joy that God has been so good to sinful and broken people like us, bringing us forgiveness, healing, and salvation—new life! Our response to God’s gift is to follow Jesus on the way of the cross, the way of love. This means that our life together—embodied in seven geographically organized regions—consists of growing in loving God, loving one another, and loving our neighbors. In addition to our corporate worship services, regions meet for Sunday School on Sunday mornings to feed upon the word of God and to deepen relationships. We are committed to life‑giving biblical proclamation, to transformative relationships with one another across the diverse generations and ethnicities that are found in our community, and to faithful worship of the triune God. Our mission and life are shaped by our location in the heart of the city of Boston and by a longtime passion for mission across the world. Our staff are committed to serving one another as we serve Christ and to growing to greater maturity and health in Jesus. We meet weekly for staff chapel, a time of prayer and engagement in the Scripture. In our teammates we value godliness, collaboration, excellence, courage, and a commitment to healthy relationships. The church is experiencing a season of renewal and rebuilding, and we are thankful for the strong collaboration among our current staff. Beyond the weekly staff chapel, our ministers collaborate and pray together on a weekly basis. We are looking for a humble team player with leadership experience and a pastoral heart who can serve and support the Senior Minister, the staff, and the ministry and mission of the church through operational, organizational, administrative, and financial leadership. Ministry Overview The Executive Minister/Director will work closely with and under the direction of the Senior Minister to advise him, to implement leadership decisions, to manage staff and church operations (including finances and budgets, facility, personnel, communications, and technology) and to align the various ministries of the church in a way that increases and secures their effectiveness. The Executive Minister/Director is intended to function as the church’s chief operating leader, similar to a Chief Operating Officer in a complex non‑profit or mission‑driven organization, responsible for translating vision into execution, stewarding people and resources, and ensuring organizational health and sustainability. The Executive Minister/Director will manage staff and church operations (including finances and budgets, facility, personnel, communications, and technology) across a complex, multi‑stakeholder organization, and seek to align the various ministries of the church through disciplined operational leadership, strategic planning, and execution excellence. The Executive Minister/Director will report directly to the Senior Minister and will serve as the staff liaison to the Finance and Administration Committee. The Executive Minister/Director will have the following direct reports: Minister of Missions, Minister of Discipleship, Assistant Minister, Minister to Internationals, Controller, Director of Facilities, Director of Communications, and the Admin, Communications, and Financial Coordinator. Ministry Description General Pastoral Ministry (applicable to Executive Minister, not Executive Director) The Executive Minister serves alongside our Senior Minister and other ministers in carrying out the full range of pastoral responsibilities in the life of our community, seeking to equip the people of our congregation for work of ministry (Ephesians 4.12) and to “spend and be spent” for their souls (2 Corinthians 12.15). Every minister’s primary aim is to labor to “present everyone mature in Christ” (Colossians 1.28) and to do this through a faithful, stable, loving, Christ‑like presence and ministry in our community. Our ministers are generalists before we are specialists. Possible duties include participating in various elements of corporate worship on Sunday, attending and leading Newcomers Lunches, teaching in New Members and/or Sunday School classes, officiating at weddings and/or funerals, shepherding congregants in an assigned region, and assisting in other ways as needed and as time allows. Specific Responsibilities Model a life of Christian faithfulness in reliance upon the Holy Spirit by cultivating a healthy spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical, and family life. Develop and maintain a strong, vibrant and healthy working relationship with the Senior Minister, helping to ensure his appropriate engagement with staff, individually and corporately, and with the congregation. Help build a cohesive, Gospel‑centered and productive staff culture with a clear and shared vision, and ensuring that staff are held accountable to this. Align and partner with the Senior Minister to activate and operationalize our people, programs and vision for faithful and fruitful ministry at Park Street Church. Develop a sustainable leadership development strategy for staff, officers and lay leaders. Establish ongoing processes for monitoring progress against individual and staff‑wide goals and build processes to coordinate, evaluate and improve programs on an ongoing basis. Oversee the execution and oversight of all ministries, staff, and operations of Park Street Church, including finance, human resources, staff matters (hiring and firing, staff reviews, professional development), facilities, insurance, technology, policies, procedures, and systems. Lead and coordinate, in consultation with the Senior Minister, the development of the annual budgets in partnership with the appropriate staff members and committees. Participate in monthly Missions Finance meetings to act on spending proposals and evaluate the financial status of Missions budget. Ensure that facilities are appropriately and effectively aligned to best meet the needs and ministries of the church. This includes overseeing major facilities projects and administering contracts as well as serving as the point person for all ministry partners or other non‑church groups that use or request to use our facilities. Be on‑call and function as a point of contact for all emergencies involving the church facilities, staff, boards, and committees. Liaise with the Finance and Administration Committee. Ministry Qualifications A personal and growing commitment to Jesus as Lord and Savior in reliance upon his grace. A commitment to the authority of Scripture and to a lifestyle that befits a follower of Jesus. A record of maintaining proper priorities and boundaries in one’s personal and family life. A passion for excellence for the glory of God. A willingness to honor and work within the framework of the church’s governing structure and procedures. A commitment to support personally the work of the church through financial gifts and prayer. A willing heart, teachable and humble spirit, positive attitude, flexible nature, and a sense of humor. A team ministry commitment which places the good of the whole over individual goals. An ability to work collaboratively with staff and volunteers. Emotionally mature and able to properly relate to, affirm, and encourage others while maintaining the ability to give guidance, direction, and hold accountable. Demonstrated senior leadership experience in a complex organization (e.g., church, non‑profit, education, healthcare, business, or mission‑driven enterprise), with accountability for people, budgets, and operations. A proven track record in the following areas: strategic thinking and implementation, with the ability to take high‑level goals and turn them into detailed, executable plans; solving problems and handling conflict in a healthy manner; developing systems and processes, and seeing their development as a way to minister and express love for God and the church; the use of technology, including strong proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, Planning Center, and accounting software. An ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral communication. A comfort with Reformed theology, which is the historic perspective of the church and the predominant perspective of our staff, but also irenic toward other responsible Evangelical viewpoints. Preferred Experience leading from the “second chair” in support of a senior executive or senior pastor. Minimum 7 years of ministry, business, or non‑profit leadership. Ministry Requirements The Executive Minister must have at least a Master of Divinity degree from a well‑regarded seminary (or equivalent). Additional education, such as a DMin, ThM, ThD, or PhD is desirable but not required. It is preferable that the candidate have some kind of formal business training. Candidates without an MDiv (or equivalent) are encouraged to apply for the Executive Director role, particularly those with substantial executive, operational, or organizational leadership experience. Candidates must have excellent fluency in English. It is a requirement for this position that the Executive Minister/Director will signify agreement with Park Street Church’s Covenant of Faith and Confession of Faith. The Executive Minister/Director must agree with and affirm all doctrinal policies of Park Street Church approved by the Board of Elders and become a member of the church as soon as possible within the first year of service. Who Should Consider This Role This role may be a strong fit for a mature Christian leader who has a pastoral heart and senses a calling to steward people, systems, and resources in service of the local church, particularly those with experience in senior operational, financial, administrative, or organizational leadership roles who desire to bring their professional gifts to bear in furthering the global mission of Park Street Church. #J-18808-Ljbffr Park Street Church)
