Chemical Dependency Counselor

Roles and Responsibilities Conduct clinical interviews and assessments; gather information for diagnostic and treatment planning purposes. Provide interventions using evidence‑based techniques and methodologies approved by the department. Provide individual, group therapy and collateral interventions; create an atmosphere of trust and safety. Provide crisis intervention to clients who are in apparent emotional distress. Provide referrals to community agencies and providers for support or additional services. Assure compliance with State Regulations, legal requirements and established Borough policies and procedures related to mental health services. Assist patients in locating resources by contacting appropriate agencies over the phone and in person; coordinate with other agencies concerning referrals of mental health cases; arrange for hospitalization for mental patients requiring inpatient care. Use a variety of diagnostic and rating tools to evaluate client progress, effectiveness of intervention and/or to assist treatment planning. Participate in the development of treatment plans for clients to alleviate current areas of impairment; assure that treatment plans have problem‑solving objectives. Serve as service coordinator as assigned. Document daily interventions provided for clients; efficiently document all billable interactions into AKAIM, utilizing DAP note formatting. Participate in weekly clinical supervision and follow training guidelines and instructions as provided by the clinical supervisor. Attend and participate in team meetings where current cases are reviewed; review cases with social and community agencies as appropriate; adhere to applicable confidentiality laws and maintain case records including agency forms, documentation sheets, and related forms concerning cases. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications and Education Requirements Combination of education, experience and licensure accepted. Must be working toward CDC I certification; must be eligible for CDC II certification within three years upon hire. Experience in substance abuse or mental health field including: Delivering direct individual and group services. Conducting assessments utilizing the DSM‑V and ASAM criteria. Creating individualized treatment plans addressing mental health and substance use issues. Participating in treatment team. Demonstrating crisis intervention skills. Case management and supervision. Adhering to ethical guidelines of related profession. Maintaining CEUs needed for licensure and continued professionalism. Establishing and maintaining therapeutic boundaries. Exhibiting excellent written and verbal communication skills. Possessing basic computer skills and fluid use of electronic communication tools. Administering UAs and breathalyzers as needed. Participating as part of an interdisciplinary team to address clinical concerns relating to clients. Receiving direct supervision from the Clinical Director. Preferred Skills Basic understanding of mental health disorders as defined in DSM V codes. Basic understanding of substance abuse level of care as defined by ASAM. Knowledge of crisis intervention principles. Ability to provide individual, group and family therapy sessions. Ability to establish treatment plans.
