POSITION OVERVIEW: The Nurse Manager of the Progressive Care Unit manages the delivery of professional nursing services for assigned units. This position is responsible for the overall planning, budgeting, staffing, performance, and operation of the department in conjunction with the director as well as performance and annual review of direct reports. This position directly manages caregivers in the Progressive Care Unit.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: Oversee the operations of assigned department to ensure smooth and efficient department operations and that resources are available in the assigned units 24/7. Collaborates with other staff members to facilitate provision of patient care. Ensures adequate departmental staffing to provide safe patient care through review of appropriate data, development and maintenance of master schedules. Acts as the department liaison to other hospital departments and outside entities. Responsible for resource management ensuring appropriate and sufficient equipment and supplies are available. Manages staffing and scheduling (control of master schedule; ETO & LOA approval; light duty scheduling) - delegates related clerical functions to admin assistant and/or other applicable staff. Serves as a real-time resource and assists with clinical expertise for staff with problem-solving on patient care, processes, and family issues. Serves as representative for all customers. Maintains ongoing communication with staff, department leadership, and others to ensure needs are being met for staff and patients. Engages medical staff to obtain input on the operation of the department and key decisions. Communicates (both written and orally) effectively and maintains professional relationships with caregivers, medical staff, patients, guests and other hospital departments. Role models two-way communication of the St. Charles Health System mission, vision, values, and strategic plan for the department (staff meetings, rounds, etc.). Coordinates quality initiatives and process improvements. Aligns and manages to St. Charles Health System metrics and quality initiatives. Oversees trending of quality and financial indicators including LOS with case manager support. Facilitates department meetings and shared governance/leadership efforts. Responsible for budget development, regular monitoring, accountability and meeting all operational targets for all areas within span of control. Manages operations within the budget. Provides productivity oversight and review. Works with leadership to achieve productivity standards. Develops and implements annual plan including goals for unit with director and supervisor. Controls and maintains position control including the addition and deletion of positions related to budget and human resource needs. Hires, directs, coaches and monitors the performance of all direct reports, to develop and maintain a high performance team that meets organizational and department goals. Responsible for performance and annual review of direct reports. Complies with Human Resource processes and controls. Monitors and ensure all direct reports are current with compliance and safety requirements. Implements and manages all organizational safety directives and goals. Provides and oversees team's delivery of customer service in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient and accurate. Assists with quality, safety, customer service and regulatory compliance oversight: EMS - Receipt, assignment, tracking and trending, delegation. Creates a healing environment that supports all aspects of care, respects the wholeness of the individual, and demonstrates therapeutic presence through attitudes and behaviors that enhance the care experience for patients and caregivers.
Oversees staff documentation for patient care to ensure proficiency in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory agencies. Directs, oversees and provides for leadership development of staff. Supports the vision, mission and values of the organization in all respects. Collaborates with teams to review processes and identify/implement opportunities for improvements, applying Value Improvement Practice concepts and tools. Supports Value Improvement Practice (VIP- Lean) principles of continuous improvement with energy and enthusiasm, functioning as a champion of change. Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients and guests. Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality. Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, supporting the organization's corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violation of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all organizational investigations and proceedings. May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned. EDUCATION Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
BSN or Master's degree in related field.
Preferred: Master's degree in related field. LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION Required: Current licensure with the Oregon State Board of Nursing. Valid Oregon driver's license and ability to meet St. Charles Health System driving requirements. Ability to travel to business functions/trainings/meetings and all St. Charles Health System worksites. AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification. Preferred: N/A EXPERIENCE Required: Minimum of 4 years nursing experience, of which 2 years should be progressively more responsible experience relating to a management role.
Preferred: Experience in a specialty area of nursing. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely. ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION: General: Must have excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population and professionally represent St. Charles Health System.
Ability to effectively interact and communicate with all levels within St. Charles Health System and external customers/clients/potential employees. Strong team working and collaborative skills. Ability to effectively reach consensus with a diverse population with differing needs. Ability to manage facilitation and consensus building among health care professionals and agencies and achieve expected results. Ability to multi-task and work independently. Attention to detail. Excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication and customer service skills, particularly in dealing with stressful personal interactions. Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills. Demonstrated ability and experience in computer applications, use of electronic medical record keeping systems and MS Office. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Continually (75% or more): Use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level.
Frequently (50%): Sitting, keyboard operation. Occasionally (25%): Standing, walking, bending, stooping/kneeling/crouching, climbing stairs, reaching overhead, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 1-10 pounds, grasping/squeezing, operation of a motor vehicle, ability to hear whispered speech level. Never (0%): Climbing ladder/step-stool, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 11-50 pounds. Exposure to Elemental Factors Occasionally (25%): Chemical solution for Laboratory Caregivers. Rarely (10%): Wet/slippery area. Never (0%): Heat, cold, noise, dust, vibration, chemical solution, uneven surface. Blood-Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Category Risk for Exposure to BBP
DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Progressive Care Unit is a unit within Critical Care Services. This unit will care for patients in need of increased monitoring and treatment that medical/surgical units are unable to safely provide due to medication administration, nursing hours and/or cardiac/respiratory monitoring capabilities. Patient care includes but not limited to: Stable mechanical ventilator support; Vasoactive drug infusions; Continuous and/or bolus of antiarrhythmic intravenous medication; Moderate sedation cardioversions; Post cardiac procedures, interventions and/or surgeries; Post-operative arrhythmia management; Post-operative thoracotomy. This unit will also follow an acuity adaptable model to allow the improved change in acuity of the patient to reside on the progressive care unit from admission to discharge.
