The primary function of the Investigator is to perform investigative police work for the Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Work is performed under the supervision of the Prosecuting Attorney, but considerable latitude is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The principal duties of this class are performed in both a general office environment and an outdoor environment that may include exposure to adverse weather conditions and to potential personal danger. Positions within the class:
Investigator I is the entry level in the prosecutor investigator series. This class is typically used as a training class, and employees work under immediate supervision while learning job skills and tasks. Investigator II is the second level in the prosecutor investigator series. This class is typically assigned to an employee that has extensive law enforcement and/or investigative experience either with law enforcement or as a prosecutor investigator. Key Responsibilities
• Criminal and Civil Investigation:
o Investigate criminal and civil conflict cases for jurisdictions as assigned
o Investigate civil litigation matters
o Assist deputy prosecutors in all facets of case preparation, including but not limited to trial preparation, meeting with victims and witnesses, locate and collect evidence, interviewing defense witnesses, and other matters as needed for case readiness
o Conduct ILETS/NCIC research as needed for deputy prosecutors
o Civil process including service of subpoenas, orders to show cause, etc.
o Serve criminal warrants as assigned
o Locate victims, witnesses, and suspects, including interviewing when required
o Investigate DSD complaints including interviewing, taking photographs and conducting surveillance
o Investigate and follow-up on criminal cases as assigned
• Personnel Investigations:
o Conducts Personnel investigations as assigned
o Conduct background investigations for the Canyon County Prosecutor's Office
• Training:
o Provide training to deputy prosecutors and partnering law enforcement agencies
o Maintain training which is applicable to duty assignment
o Engage in community outreach projects regarding public safety
• Other Duties:
o Identifies, evaluates and recommends areas of services that may be enhanced
o Office runner, document delivery
o Performs policy review, and research
o Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with county policies, procedures, and safety practices
o Other duties as assigned
Qualifications Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
• Prosecuting Attorney functions, procedures, policies, goals;
• Local, state and federal laws;
• Methods, objectives, and procedures of law enforcement practices;
• Methods, objectives, and procedures of court proceedings;
• Investigative techniques and report writing skills;
• Canyon County Personnel policy;
• Sheriff's equipment, including vehicles, speed radar units, communications units, body armor, handcuffs, firearms, batons, and other related equipment;
• Operation of a personal computer and job-related software;
• FLSA, FMLA, ADA, and Workers Compensation laws and applicability. Ability to:
• Work cooperatively and constructively with fellow workers and members of the public to provide public service of the highest quality and quantity;
• Work cooperatively and constructively with local law enforcement agencies;
• Understand and apply departmental, state, and local law enforcement procedures, policies, rules, and regulations;
• Analyze situations quickly and objectively, to recognize actual and potential dangers, and to determine proper course of action;
• Cope with stressful situations calmly, fairly, tactfully, and with respect for individual rights

• High school diploma or GED equivalency, bachelor's degree preferred
• Investigator I - At least the equivalent of three (3) years of experience in assigned field; or
• Investigator II - At least the equivalent of seven (7) years of experience in assigned field; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience, training and collegiate education may be considered
Special Qualifications
• Investigator I: Idaho basic POST Certification required
• Investigator II: Idaho Intermediate or higher certification required
• Successfully complete a background investigation including polygraph examination
• Have and maintain firearms qualifications as established by the Prosecuting Attorney
• Valid Idaho Driver's License Essential Physical Abilities
• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively, interview people, and perform telephone and radio communication
• Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, perform surveillance, sight and shoot a firearm, gather evidence at crime scenes, and coordinate and conduct detailed investigations
• Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to use a firearm safely and effectively, write reports, utilize equipment required for the performance of duties, and operate a vehicle
