Assistant Geologist / Geologist Trainee - NY HELPS (4 Positions)

DutiesDescription The four positions are located in the Division of Environmental Remediation, Remedial BureauA, Remedial BureauB, Remedial BureauC, and Remedial BureauD. Description Remedial BureausA,B, andD: The successful candidates will serve as a project manager overseeing state‑funded and privately funded remedial programs at a variety of sites across NewYorkState. Duties include management and oversight of investigation and remediation projects in various programs such as the inactive hazardous waste disposal site program (State Superfund), the Brownfield Cleanup Program, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action program. Duties will include reviewing site documentation, workplans, and reports to assess compliance with NewYorkState policies and regulations; interaction with remedial parties, property owners and the public; interaction with governmental agencies and municipal leadership; oversight of remediation sites, remedial consultants and contractors; review of site conditions and data to assess the nature and extent of site contamination; evaluation of remedial alternatives and remedy selection; review of remedial designs and implementation of selected remedies; and monitoring of remedy effectiveness. The project manager is expected to manage multiple projects, while prioritizing workload and addressing all site technical and administrative needs. Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) – based software a plus. Additional duties will be discussed during interviews. Remedial BureauC The successful candidate will serve as a project manager overseeing state‑funded and privately funded remedial programs at a variety of sites across NewYorkState. Duties include project management in all project phases including site investigation and remediation for projects in programs such as the State Superfund (SSF) program, Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) program, and the Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) program. MGP sites are located statewide, while the BCP and SSF sites are primarily located in Region3. Duties will include the technical review of all site documents, including workplans, RI/FS reports, design documents, and reports to assess compliance with NewYorkState policies and regulations; drafting factsheets, decision documents and records of decision; interaction with remedial parties, property owners, the public, governmental agencies and municipal leadership; oversight of remediation sites, remedial consultants and contractors; review of site conditions and data to assess the nature and extent of contamination; evaluation of remedial alternatives and remedy selection; review of remedial designs and implementation of selected remedies; and monitoring of remedy effectiveness. The project manager is expected to manage multiple projects while prioritizing workload. Some field work may involve working around heavy machinery such as drill rigs and construction equipment. Additional duties will be discussed during interviews. TravelPercentage 30% Qualifications MinimumQualifications GeologistTrainee, NS: bachelor’s degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology. AssistantGeologist, G‑20: bachelor’s degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology, AND either: Proof of passing the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) examination, or a professional geologist licensure with current registration. For candidates eligible for 55‑b/55‑c appointment, 70.4 transfer, or NYHELPS appointment: see the above qualifications and include a copy of the letter from Civil Service indicating approval for the 55‑b/55‑c program. Individuals appointed as a Geologist Trainee must complete a minimum of one year of successful performance as a Geologist Trainee and pass the National Association of State Boards of Geologist’s Fundamentals of Geology (FG) examination. If the FG is passed by the end of the first year, advancement to the Grade20 AssistantGeologist title is possible without further examination. If the FG is not passed by the end of the second year of the traineeship, termination will occur. SalaryandBenefits Starting salary for the AssistantGeologist, SG‑20 level: $81,193 (base $74,193 + geographic pay differential $7,000). Job rate for the position: $101,121 (base salary $94,121 + geographic pay differential $7,000). Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet transportation needs. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain and work in adverse weather conditions. Travel, overtime, and overnight travel may be required. Must successfully complete (or have completed) the 40‑hour OSHA1910.120 training course and all other required training. Must complete an annual Health and Safety Program including medical monitoring, fit testing, and 40‑hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Telecommuting may be available up to 50% of the work schedule, to be discussed at interview.
