School Nurse Best to apply by 06/09/2026. ESD 113 learns from and cares for our staff, schools, students, families, and the land, works alongside communities to build pathways that expand opportunity, and acts with collective purpose to advance educational justice. This position will be working throughout the ESD 113 Region. The ESD 113 Region includes school districts throughout Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, and Thurston counties. This position is scheduled for between 7-10 hours/day and 190 days/year. Regular school year and part time positions are available in all counties. The final schedules are to be determined by the school program per candidate preference and position availability.

Purpose Statement The job of School Nurse is done for the purpose/s of assessing the health needs of students; developing emergency care plans and individual health plans, incorporating input from parent and physician, complying with the laws relating to student health, and including parental and guardian consent; providing and overseeing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and injured students; providing health information; and serving as a resource to teachers, staff, and administrators and identifying health problems for referral. Essential Functions Health Assessment Assesses the physical and emotional health of children (e.g. student safety, abuse, health related issues, etc.) for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment, and complying with legal requirements. Health-Related Activities Assists with a variety of health-related activities (e.g. coordination and oversight of several screening programs, policy and procedure development, implementation, etc.) for the purpose of identifying health concerns and delivering school health services in compliance with established guidelines. Site Assessment Conducts site assessments (e.g. health and safety issues, building accessibility, emergency preparedness, etc.) for the purpose of identifying issues and providing recommendations for improving safety and accessibility. Stakeholder Coordination Coordinates with a variety of stakeholders (e.g. parents, students, health care providers, agencies, etc.) for the purpose of promoting needed treatment, securing information, and complying with legal requirements. Care Plan Development Develops care plans with priority given to those students with life threatening conditions (e.g. individual health care plans, emergency plans, etc.) for the purpose of addressing student health needs and implementing prescribed health care. Meeting and Workshop Leadership Leads meetings and workshops (e.g. multidisciplinary assessment team, health counseling and crisis intervention, IEPs, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and receiving information, assessing student health status, serving as an advocate for the health rights of students, and making recommendations for individualized education programs. Documentation Maintenance Maintains a variety of documents, files, and records (e.g. health care plans, medical emergency cards, student health history, immunization records, etc.) for the purpose of providing documentation, conveying information, and collecting data required. Medical Treatment Management Manages first aid, medication, and specialized medical treatment (e.g. oral suctioning, catheterization, illness referrals, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and injured children. Professional Training Participation Participates in training on various health related subjects (e.g. CPR, disaster preparedness, child abuse, health education, etc.) for the purpose of promoting a healthy lifestyle and acting as a resource to students, teachers, and other school personnel. Off-Site Services Provides a variety of off-site services (e.g. home visits, transportation to students and families, etc.) for the purpose of facilitating follow-up medical care and ensuring access to health care providers. Contagious Disease Reporting Reports students with contagious diseases to local public health authorities for the purpose of minimizing infection and complying with the law. Health Research Researches a variety of health-related topics (e.g. trends in patient care, new treatments, better assessment of medical conditions, etc.) for the purpose of providing health care information to staff, students, parents, and the public. Inquiry Response Responds to inquiries from a variety of stakeholders (e.g. staff, students, parents, clinicians, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and receiving information and providing referrals for follow-up care. Incident Review Reviews incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse on campus, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students' personal safety, a positive learning environment, and adhering to pertinent codes, policies, regulations, and laws. Staff Supervision Supervises staff in a variety of health-related activities (e.g. oral medication administration, provision of medical treatments, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for students. Travel Requirements Travels as needed for the purpose of performing the essential functions of the position. Other Functions Personnel Assistance Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting the completion of departmental work. Related Duties Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge Required Knowledge is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; stages of child development; pediatric and family nursing practices; community health concepts; and pertinent policies, codes, regulations and laws. Skills Required Skills are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; handling hazardous materials/waste; operating equipment used in clinical setting; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records. Abilities Required Ability is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant.
