Accounting Manager

As part of that commitment, the Accounting Manager plays a critical role in ensuring the financial strength and operational integrity of our organization. This leader will oversee key accounting functions monthly close, retail and wholesale fuel accounting, and motor fuel compliance—while championing accuracy and process improvement. With a strong foundation in financial reporting and regulatory standards, the Accounting Manager will lead a high-performing team and provide strategic financial insights to help guide business decisions. By ensuring our financial operations are efficient, reliable, and forward-looking, this role supports the long‑term growth and stability of Cary Oil. Some responsibilities may include: Leadership & Supervision Leading and developing a high-performing accounting team Provide hands‑on leadership, coaching, and support to team members across the reporting and close accounting functions. Guide team development through regular performance conversations, targeted training, and growth opportunities that align with both individual goals and business needs. Navigate organizational change with confidence, including system implementations, acquisitions, and department restructuring—ensuring team alignment and continuity throughout transitions. Support talent decisions by participating in hiring processes and compensation discussions to help attract, retain, and reward top accounting talent. Financial Reporting & Analysis Delivering accurate, timely, and actionable financial insights Prepare and analyze monthly gross profit reports, income statements, and sales performance to support operational and strategic decision-making. Draft and distribute accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and footnotes in alignment with accounting standards and company reporting requirements. Lead the preparation of year‑end workpapers and tax schedules to support external audits and compliance requirements. Complete and review monthly account reconciliations, ensuring all accounts are reconciled annually and discrepancies are addressed promptly. Ensure accurate departmental allocation of revenue and expenses to reflect business performance across divisions. Present financial information in a clear, concise manner to senior leadership, enabling informed strategic decisions. Tax Compliance & Reporting Ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant tax filings Prepare and file state motor fuel tax returns in accordance with regulatory deadlines. Generate year‑end tax schedules and issue 1099‑NEC and 1099‑MISC forms for vendors and customers to ensure compliance with federal reporting requirements. Maintain compliance with all tax reporting deadlines and support audit readiness through accurate documentation and timely response to inquiries. Systems & Process Improvement Driving efficiency through technology and workflow optimization Oversee accounting‑related systems including general ledger, fixed asset, and lease management platforms—ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and ease of use. Lead system upgrades and implementation projects, including user training, change management, and ongoing troubleshooting. Continuously evaluate and enhance accounting workflows to streamline operations, reduce manual effort, and improve data integrity. Ensure accurate allocation of hours worked across departments to support effective labor tracking and reporting. Requirements Education Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. CPA license preferred. Experience Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including oversight of financial reporting, payroll, AP/AR, and tax compliance. Public accounting experience strongly preferred (5+ years ideal). 3–5 years of managerial or supervisory experience preferred, with demonstrated success in leading accounting teams. Industry experience in fuel, energy, or logistics is a plus. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong attention to detail and accuracy in high-volume, deadline-driven environments. Proven ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining clarity and focus under pressure. Experience standardizing accounting procedures and driving process improvements. Proficiency in financial systems and accounting software, with strong Excel and Word skills; experience with Power BI and AI-driven tools is a plus. Ability to calculate, interpret, and analyze complex financial data including amortizations, interest, and commissions. Skilled at writing reports, interpreting financial statements, and presenting insights clearly to senior leadership. Effective communicator and collaborator with the ability to coach, develop, and motivate accounting staff.
