LOCATION: Moundsville Middle School

EMPLOYMENT TERM: 2026-2027 School year, season varies including flex days

BID PERIOD: August 27 - September 2, 2026, 4 pm.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Plan, organize, and supervise all aspects of the assigned athletic program, including practices, contests, conditioning activities, team meetings, and related team events.
  2. Promote student safety, welfare, and appropriate conduct while students are under the coach's supervision, including before, during, and after practices, contests, travel, and team activities.
  3. Develop and maintain a positive team culture that emphasizes sportsmanship, respect, discipline, teamwork, and school pride.
  4. Support the educational mission of the school by encouraging academic success, appropriate behavior, responsible citizenship, and regular school attendance among student-athletes.
  5. Comply with all applicable board policies, administrative procedures, conference/league requirements, state athletic association rules, and federal/state laws governing student athletics.
  6. Communicate and work cooperatively with administrators, athletic personnel, students, parents/guardians, officials, other coaches, and the public to support the athletic program.
  7. Coordinate with coaches and athletic programs at other grade levels and schools, when applicable, to promote program continuity and student development.
  8. Supervise, account for, and help maintain equipment, uniforms, supplies, and assigned facilities in a safe, responsible, and organized manner.
  9. Provide appropriate leadership and direction to assistant coaches and volunteers assigned to the program, consistent with school expectations and administrative oversight.
  10. Maintain professional conduct, professional work habits, and positive public representation of the school and athletic program.
  11. Participate in required meetings, trainings, certifications, and professional development; maintain and improve coaching knowledge, skills, and required credentials.
  12. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the principal, athletic director, or other appropriate administrator.
QUALIFICATIONS: A coach for a WVSSAC sport must be certified as a teacher (or substitute) in the State of WV or complete the National Federal Interscholastic Coaches Education Program as endorsed by the WVSSAC and the State Board of Education, and receive a coaching authorization issued by the WV Department of Education. Must also have or be willing to get current CPR/AED certification.

Applicants must be fully credentialed professionals or substitutes or hold a valid WVDE coaching certification before participating in ANY WVSSAC sport coaching duties. Coaching duties must not interfere with other contracted duties held by the successful applicant, and the successful applicant must be available for practice and game times and dates as determined by the principal. No names will be taken to the board for approval without valid certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of a coaching position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  1. Frequently stand, walk, move throughout indoor and outdoor athletic areas, and remain present for practices, contests, meetings, travel, and team activities.
  2. Communicate verbally and hear effectively in settings with moderate to high background noise, including gyms, fields, tracks, stadiums, locker rooms, sidelines, buses, and crowds.
  3. Use close, distance, and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus to observe participants, monitor safety, evaluate techniques, and respond to game or practice conditions.
  4. Use hands and arms to handle equipment, demonstrate or support drills, distribute materials, operate communication devices, and perform routine coaching tasks.
  5. Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, climb stairs, and navigate uneven or changing surfaces such as fields, tracks, courts, dugouts, sidelines, bleachers, and locker-room areas.
  6. Occasionally demonstrate sport-specific techniques or movements and move quickly in response to play, supervision needs, weather, injury, or safety situations.
  7. Lift, carry, push, or pull athletic equipment and supplies generally up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally, with assistance or appropriate equipment when needed.
  8. Maintain attention, judgment, situational awareness, and emotional control during routine and unexpected situations involving students, contests, travel, and athletic events.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  1. Work is performed in a variety of athletic and school settings, including gymnasiums, fields, tracks, courts, stadiums, weight rooms, locker rooms, classrooms, buses, and off-site competition venues.
  2. The position may require indoor and outdoor work in varying weather and environmental conditions, including heat, cold, wind, humidity, rain, and changing field or surface conditions.
  3. The employee may work during regular school hours, evenings, weekends, school breaks, and extended days associated with practices, contests, tournaments, travel, and special events.
  4. The work environment may include moderate to loud noise from participants, spectators, public address systems, music, whistles, and athletic activity.
  5. The employee may encounter wet, muddy, icy, slippery, hard, or uneven walking/playing surfaces and moving athletic equipment, balls, or projectiles associated with practice and competition.
  6. The employee is expected to maintain a safe environment, follow district and school safety procedures, use assigned protective equipment when applicable, and respond appropriately to student injuries, emergencies, and weather-related or facility-related conditions.

SALARY: Salary to be determined by salary classification level, experience, and education according to schedule at Coaches new to MCS must prove their past coaching experience through verification of employment forms sent from previous employers to our payroll department.
