Job Title: Tool Maker C Job Code: 36069 Job Location: Salt Lake City, Utah Job Schedule: 9/80 (employee’s work 9 out of every 14 days – totaling 80 hours worked – and have every other Friday off) A Tool Maker C is an experienced‑level professional expected to employ proficient machining and fabrication knowledge that will translate to a quick impact on meeting production needs. Tool Makers are responsible for fabricating, building, handling, repairing and integrating complex parts, assemblies and machines normally used in engineering prototypes, one‑of‑a‑kind product or low‑volume manufacturing. They may design and fabricate manufacturing assembly aids and tooling. They work from blueprints, process sheets and sketches to perform production tasks, which includes the cutting and shaping of metal to precision dimensions. They monitor and verify the quality of machining operations against quality control procedures. They often interface with engineers in prototyping and optimizing assembly processes and procedures for manufacturability. Work tasks may include fabrication (assembly, sawing, drilling, bending, grinding, deburring, labeling, etc.), sheet‑metal forming, milling (CNC and manual), lathe turning (CNC and manual), laser cutting, precision measuring equipment (CMM, calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.), EDM, welding, chemical processing (Alodine), 3D printing, overhead crane operation, and machine maintenance. Responsibilities Repair damaged parts and assemblies to bring them into conformance with drawing requirements. Fabricate, modify, and assemble parts as defined by engineering drawings, CAD files, and sketches; assembly includes installation of hardware such as rivets, press‑fit pins, fastener inserts, bushings, clips, nut plates, gaskets, etc. Plan, layout, set up, and operate equipment associated with sheet‑metal fabrication. Machine and fabricate materials such as aluminum, steel, and stainless‑steel in plate, sheet, bar, and structural forms; rarely brass and copper. Set up and operate manufacturing and fabrication equipment using specified programs and tooling. Assess workload across multiple work centers and prioritize work according to business need, batching efficiency, age of work, and supervisor direction. Apply and interpret GD&T tolerances. Calculate and verify dimensions against tolerances using instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges. Aid engineering in creating, modifying, and updating fixtures and tooling. Record all work operations performed, non‑conformances, and input specifications into computer‑based programs. Perform preventive maintenance on machines. Diagnose tooling and equipment malfunctions and coordinate with engineering/management to repair or replace damaged assets. Maintain work area and machine shop to 5S + 1 standards. Complete all required company training promptly. Support overtime (extended hours, weekends, holidays) as needed. Follow company policies and procedures. Train team members on job responsibilities as needed. Participate in and drive continuous improvement projects refining quality, cost, schedule, or other items of value to the business. Other responsibilities as assigned by management. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 6 years of prior relevant experience. Associate’s Degree with a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. Proficient knowledge and skills on all job responsibilities listed above. Flexibility to receive on‑the‑job training to learn essential job skills, which may require adjusting work schedule. Experience working intricate tasks requiring application of experienced‑level knowledge, concepts, and techniques. Aptitude to work autonomously with limited supervision. Confidence to explain facts and practices related to the job area for audits. Experience collaborating with a team to resolve assignments and problems. Committed to working with supervisor to resolve issues. Demonstrated experience as a moderate contributor toward operational goals. Ability to maintain professional standards of performance, demeanor, and judgment at all times as detailed in company policies and procedures. Comfortable wearing PPE (safety glasses, ear plugs, etc.) for extended durations. Physical effort will include standing for extended periods and lifting light to heavy loads, occasionally up to 32 lbs. Exposure to oils, moderate noise levels, chemical odors, grinding and machining dust and chips, sharp edges, and temperature variations. Preferred Additional Skills 2+ years of recent (within last 6 years) experience in welding aluminum and steels. 2+ years of recent experience in GD&T application. 2+ years of recent experience applying CMM methods of inspection (CALYPSO software). 2+ years of recent experience operating CNC machines. 2+ years of recent experience reading and modifying G‑code. 2+ years of recent experience adjusting feeds and speeds. 2+ years of recent experience in CNC programming (MasterCAM 3/4/5‑Axis Mill, Lathe, Mill‑Turn). 2+ years of recent experience in CAD (Siemens NX).
