Security Officer

Job Summary Responsible for maintaining a safe and peaceful environment for all individuals on hospital property. Under general supervision and following standardized policies and procedures, this role maintains a secure and orderly environment and protects the grounds and off‑site buildings for Corewell Health, ensuring the safety of employees, visitors, and patients. The position may require Armed Security Officers to obtain Public Act 330 certification and enable arrests for misdemeanors and compliance with Michigan State Police PA 330 certification requirements. Essential Functions Patrol campus on foot and in vehicle (or on bike as assigned). Locks doors, assists with motor access, and remains observant of suspicious activities and security violations. Performs duties at assigned posts and assists patients, visitors, and employees. Enforces hospital rules, regulations, and policies. Assists in the Security Operations Center monitoring phones, alarms, cameras, and radio traffic. Provides statistical safety and security reporting to internal customers and senior management regarding performance, improvement strategies, and compliance issues. Completes assigned or self‑generated reports or logs daily on activities, irregularities, investigations, calls, and lost articles; forwards reports to managers and executives. Investigates suspected crimes on the hospital grounds and off‑site locations, prepares reports, evaluates data, and documents findings. Co‑operates with law enforcement on complaints. Provides security escorts and assistance to employees, visitors, or patients as required. Responds to routine inquiries and directs visitors to appropriate areas, preventing unauthorized access to restricted areas. Uses proactive non‑violent verbal de‑escalation skills to neutralize volatile situations. Assists nursing staff with physical management/ restraint of patients as ordered by a physician. Uses defensive tactics and the approved MCOLES force continuum against non‑patient aggressors to safeguard lives and well‑being of staff, patients, and visitors. May possess, carry, and utilize Conduit Electronic Weapons, tasers, and other weapons in conjunction with the MCOLES force continuum per Corewell Health policy. May provide CPR and first aid during medical emergencies on the grounds or in public areas until trained medical staff can arrive (Acute Care) or Local Fire Department (Ambulatory) as per EMTALA law. Assists Emergency Department staff with Hazmat/Decontamination procedures, including donning and doffing of PAPR’s/Tyvek suits and maintaining order in the decontamination area. Reports and responds to incidents of fire and safety hazards; inspects firefighting apparatus and extinguishers; helps with scheduled fire, disaster, and other emergency drills. Releases patient remains to appropriate agencies or funeral homes. If PA 330 is in place, utilizes Police Authority to arrest for felonies and misdemeanors on Corewell Health property, writes citations/tickets, and enforces ordinances under Michigan Law (PA 330) and local city ordinances. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. Minimum of two to three years’ law‑enforcement related work experience as a police officer, hospital security, corporate security, reserve police officer, or military police. Ability to take charge and direct others in emergencies or dangerous incidents. Electronic Control Devices (ECD) use – requires approval and authorization by the Director. Current Carry Pistol License (CPL) and successful completion of the specialized Taser Training Course. Driver’s License – State of Michigan. On‑hire CRT‑Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA; 90 days of CRT‑Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training; 90 days of CRT‑First Aid – AHA. Preferred Qualifications Graduation from a state‑regulated Police Academy. Experience related to crowd control and security.
