Custodian PositionMartin County Middle School is currently accepting applications for a 12-month Custodian for the upcoming school year. (Start Date: As soon as possible.)The employee will be required to obtain and maintain a license to drive a school bus and to drive when needed to "efficiently and effectively operate the school transportation system." (Board Policy 4701) Bus driving duty is considered an essential function of this position.FLSA: Non-ExemptReports To: Principal/Maintenance DirectorSupervises: NoneTerms Of Employment: 12 MonthsQualifications:Graduation from high school or equivalencyGeneral knowledge and experience of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and the ability to use them economically and efficientlyCurrent and valid Driver's LicenseKnowledge, Skills And Abilities:General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in janitorial work.Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials.Ability to follow instructions.Ability to perform medium physical work.Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.General Statement Of Job: Under general supervision, the Custodian performs a variety of general custodial and light grounds keeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and facilities. Work involves sweeping, mopping and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, woodwork and fixtures; and policing buildings to empty trash receptacles and pick up debris, etc.Essential Duties And Responsibilities include the following. The employee is required to follow all Board of Education policies and procedures and to comply with instructions and/or directives from his/her supervisor(s):Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfacesCleans and disinfects restroom areas and replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessaryCleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, heating/air vents and light fixturesDusts and cleans desks and other furnitureEmpties trash receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles.Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; polices grounds, picking up debris; shovels snow and/or applies de-icing compounds to walkways and driveways, as necessary.Cleans and sanitizes waste baskets and water fountains.Raises and lowers flags as neededMaintains inventory; requisitions; and picks up cleaning supplies as neededMay open and secure buildings at start and end of workday, respectively; may turn on and off lights at start and end of day, respectively, and adjusts heating or air conditioning, as appropriate.Washes windows on both the inside and the outsideArranges furniture, tables and chairs for meetings and other eventsMows and trims grass on campus grounds; trims shrubbery, trees, etc,; rakes and removes leaves as necessary.Makes minor building repairs, as ableReports major repairs needed and any damage to school property to PrincipalResponds to after-hours emergencies and works beyond normally scheduled time as neededDrives a school bus when needed to efficiently and effectively operate the school transportation system.Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or Maintenance Director.Physical And Cognitive Requirements:The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Custodian job classification within Martin County Schools. Work in this classification is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc.Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments or directions from superiors.Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple forms.
