Director, Assistant General Counsel - US Commercial Contract & Product (Discover Network) The Capital One Legal Department is seeking an experienced and collaborative corporate/commercial contract attorney to join our growing Global Payment Network Legal team. This role involves providing essential legal advice and support on a variety of commercial initiatives and transactions for the Discover Network, working closely with business and legal partners across the organization. About the Role The attorney will provide support for the Discover Network on the US Commercial and Product legal team with a focus on merchant relationships. The ideal candidate should have expertise in commercial contracting. This position will have responsibility for: Providing expert counsel and strategic guidance across a critical spectrum of areas impacting commercial relationships, including commercial contracting and risk identification and mitigation Negotiating, drafting, and guiding implementation of commercial agreements, working in close collaboration with legal and business colleagues and other subject matter experts Supporting credit, fintech and payment innovation related new product initiatives and innovation across the Discover Network Supporting the development and maintenance of competitive rule sets for the Discover Network Identifying and supporting process improvements to promote agility in legal and related business operations, including contract template improvements Partnering collaboratively with other internal counsel and business teams across the enterprise Partnering with Risk and Compliance teams to ensure comprehensive support Qualifications The successful candidate will have the following: Demonstrated leadership qualities and ability to get issues resolved across organizational borders Ability to understand complex topics quickly with depth that allows for concise and simple advice Problem solving mentality rather than thinking only like a legal technician Excellent judgment with the ability to predict long‑term consequences Growth mindset with an openness to new ideas, diverse perspectives, and unconventional solutions Strong people skills – we’re looking for someone who can build collegial and effective relationships with colleagues and clients Ownership mentality, thinking like an owner vs. an employee Solid time management skills with the ability to prioritize a significant volume of work and to manage multiple deadlines Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence others and write concisely Basic Qualifications Juris Doctor from an accredited law school Active member in good standing of at least one state bar At least 8 years of experience in a law firm, in‑house legal department, or a combination Preferred Qualifications 10+ years of experience in a law firm, in‑house legal department, or a combination Merchant and/or payment network experience At this time, Capital One will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position. The minimum and maximum full‑time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part‑time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked. Chicago, IL: $209,500 - $239,100 McLean, VA: $230,400 - $263,000 New York, NY: $251,400 - $286,900 Richmond, VA: $209,500 - $239,100 Riverwoods, IL: $209,500 - $239,100 This role is also eligible to earn performance‑based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long‑term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non‑discretionary depending on the plan.
