Overview MU Extension & Engagement – 4-H Youth Development Program: Field Specialist in 4-H Youth Development. Position is 12-month, ranked, non-tenure track at the rank of assistant, associate, or full Extension Professional. Working title: Field Specialist in 4-H Youth Development. Location: Ava, Missouri, primarily serving Douglas County along with Ozark, Taney, and Christian counties in the Southwest Region, with additional service across the state as needed. Specialist Emphasis: The program focuses on positive youth development (PYD) through progressive experiences with caring adults during non-school hours, using a human ecological approach that recognizes youth within family, school, community, and society contexts. Workload distribution at appointment: 90% Extension Teaching and 10% Traditional Service. Renewal: This appointment is renewable annually at the discretion of the University; workload distribution may change at the discretion of Extension leadership. Employment depends on work performance, funding, and educational priorities. Duties and Responsibilities Implement community-based 4-H PYD programs, in-school and after-school programs, short-term interest (SPIN) Clubs, and enrichment activities. Use and recommend research-based curriculum and teaching methods. Secure a culture of high-quality service for all 4-H members and volunteers. Provide leadership to 4-H councils and committees. Recruit, develop, and train youth and adults to assist as leaders with implementing the 4-H program. Conduct evaluations of the Missouri 4-H programs (evaluations provided). Ensure opportunities for participation in extension programs for youth and adults in the county. Apply for and administer local grants and other funding sources. Provide supervision and development to program associates. Other duties as assigned. Core Duties of MU Extension Specialists MU Extension Specialists deliver the University of Missouri to all Missourians. They bring research-based solutions to local problems, teach concepts, link people to resources, support partner organizations, participate in research, train volunteers, evaluate programs, foster innovation, and serve communities. Core duties fall into three areas: Educate, Create, and Connect. Educate : Design, conduct, and evaluate educational programs using meetings, courses, continuing education, technical assistance, volunteer training, media, websites, consultation, and other methods; support learners’ goals. Create : Develop curricula, publications, presentations, tools, websites, and other scholarly works; obtain funding to support creative works; evaluate programs for impact. Connect : Engage with learners, stakeholders, volunteers, and communities; foster engaged partnerships and connections to the University of Missouri System programs. Professional Expectations Engage with stakeholders in all counties to identify educational needs and collaborate with internal and external partners to meet those needs. Create an annual plan-of-work aligned with local needs and statewide efforts; provide monthly reports to county extension councils and supervisors; attend at least one county council meeting per month and provide program reviews with feedback and analysis. Collaborate with campus-based specialists on research projects and disseminate findings through demonstrations, field days, courses, workshops, consultations, publications, and media. Work with supervisors, other specialists, and local leaders to complete administrative tasks as needed. Demonstrate competency in communication, educational programming, subject matter knowledge, delivery, volunteer management, grant acquisition, teamwork, interpersonal relations, organization, leadership, and professionalism. Provide timely, research-based information during natural disasters or similar events. Represent the University on boards and committees as assigned. Participate in professional development to improve technical and leadership skills. Other duties to support the MU Extension mission. Additional Expectations MU Extension Specialists travel across Missouri and may travel out-of-state. A valid Missouri driver’s license, a legally operating vehicle, and wireless service are required; travel expenses are reimbursed per University policy. Programs often occur outside regular hours; specialists should expect to attend events as needed to meet learners’ and stakeholders’ needs. Leadership and Information The Senior Program Director for 4-H Youth Development provides programmatic leadership; supervision comes from the Assistant Director of Missouri 4-H and administrative oversight from the Regional Director. Anticipated Hiring Range Minimum starting salary of $58,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
