Public Transit Legal Counsel (Attorney I-Senior)

Job Overview Provide legal advice and support for Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) in advisory, transactional, litigation, and other legal matters. Responsibilities include gathering and interpreting data, conducting legal research, preparing analyses, drafting contracts, and representing the District before courts and other entities. Positions available: Attorney I, Attorney II, Attorney III, and Senior Attorney. Attorney I Entry-level attorney working under direct supervision. Performs essential functions while learning SacRT procedures and public law practice. Attorney II Qualified professional level attorney receiving general instructions, exercising judgment and initiative on legal matters, and dependable on SacRT procedures and law practice. Attorney III Advanced professional attorney applying specialized expertise to complex legal matters with limited guidance, retaining discretion over procedural techniques. Senior Attorney Senior attorney with supervisory responsibilities over legal staff and practice of law, overseeing the most complex legal matters and often reporting to the Executive Management Team. Minimum Qualifications Formal Education: Juris Doctor degree or equivalent from an accredited law school. Substitution of experience for the required education is not accepted. Experience requirements vary by level: Attorney I: No experience required. Attorney II: Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible experience as a practicing attorney, preferably in public agency law or civil litigation, or 2 years as Attorney I with SacRT. Attorney III: Minimum 5 years of responsible experience as a practicing attorney, preferably in public agency law or civil litigation, or 2 years as Attorney II with SacRT. Senior Attorney: Minimum 8 years of responsible experience as a practicing attorney, preferably in public agency law or civil litigation, or 3 years as Attorney III (or comparable position) with SacRT. Licenses & Certifications: Valid California State Bar License. Applicants awaiting California State bar results will be considered for Attorney I.
