Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Neuro Med-Surg Acute Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Days Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: 1 year License: Active Illinois RN License Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: - Level 1 trauma experience - Previous travel experience (no first-time travelers) - Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit - Experience titrating Heparin drips Description: The unit includes 54 beds. Nurse to patient ratios on day shift are 1:4-5 and on night shift are 1:5-6. Common diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizures, brain tumors, head injuries, and other neurology cases, along with some medical overflow. Nurses are required to titrate drips, including Heparin based on PTT. A charge nurse is available 24/7 but does not take an assignment unless required to maintain nurse ratios. There is also a house supervisor on duty 24/7. Patient care techs are present with ratios of 1:9-10 during the day and evening shifts, and 1:10-12 at night. RNs may troubleshoot high flow oxygen equipment but do not typically manage COVID patients. Telemetry is house-wide, and nurses are not required to read their own strips; Phillips monitors are in use. Shifts are 12 hours, with weekend requirements every other weekend and holiday requirements every other as well. Floating may occur in accordance with staff needs, where nurses will only be assigned tasks within their competencies. Tattoos must be covered while on duty, and only ear piercings are permitted. Orientation lasts two days with an educator and a preceptor.
