Fleet Services

Fleet Services maintains county vehicles and small equipment by performing both routine and preventative maintenance on a scheduled service interval. In addition, computerized records are maintained for parts, labor, and fuel usage for the accurate tracking of cost analysis required for operations and equipment replacement.

Examples of Duties

The anticipated hiring range for the Diesel Technician I is $22.45 - $26.11. The anticipated hiring range for the Diesel Technician II is $24.71 - $28.73. The anticipated hiring range for the Diesel Technician III is $27.45 - $31.91.

The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform.

Diesel Technician I

• Performs PM services on light and heavy-duty diesel vehicles; identifies safety risks and needed repairs.
• Performs standard mechanical repairs on brakes, suspension, coolant systems, belts, hoses, alternators, starters, exhaust components, etc.
• Uses scan tools and diagnostic processes to identify issues; escalates complex problems to senior technicians.
• Records repairs, communicates parts needs, and verifies labor and repair notes for accuracy.

Diesel Technician II

• Leads diagnosis of engine, after-treatment, electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and pneumatic systems.
• Completes high-skill repairs including turbochargers, injectors, high-pressure pumps, clutches, transmissions, and air brake systems.
• Performs and verifies PM on equipment and ensures safety compliance.
• Guides Diesel I and automotive technicians, answering technical questions and reviewing work quality.
• Documents repairs, researches parts, and sequences work for efficiency.
• Performs advanced on-site diagnostics and repairs during breakdowns or emergency operations.

Diesel Technician III

• Handles the most difficult and recurring technical problems; determines long-term corrective actions for fleet reliability.
• Performs engine in-frames, transmission replacements, hydraulic system restoration, DPF/DEF component replacements, and driveline system rebuilds.
• Confirms quality of high-risk repairs; provides final approval on safety-critical systems.
• Conducts skill development for Diesel I & II, introduces new diagnostic processes, ensures SOP compliance.
• Coordinates with vendors on specialty repairs, evaluates new diagnostic tools, improves PM and repair strategy.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• All Technician levels require an NC Auto Emission Inspector certification or must obtain within 6 months. Must have own hand tools and possess a valid NC driver's license.
• Tech I: Two years of experience as Automotive Mechanic/Technician and 3 ASE Certifications or must obtain within 12 months.
• Tech II: Five years of experience as Automotive Mechanic/Technician and 5 ASE Certifications or must obtain within 12 months.
• Tech III: Five years of experience as Automotive Mechanic/Technician. Requires ASE Master Certification (Auto or Truck) or must obtain within 12 months.

Additional Information

The applicant selected must undergo a criminal background check and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
