Job Overview
D. Gillette Industrial Services, Inc. is seeking an experienced CNC Mill Machinist / Programmer to join our manufacturing team. This position requires someone who can independently program, set up, and operate CNC vertical mills.
Our primary CNC milling equipment includes Takumi vertical machining centers. The ideal candidate can take a part from drawing to completion, including programming, tooling selection, machine setup, first-piece inspection, production, and final verification.
This is not an operator-only position. Candidates must have hands-on CNC milling experience and be capable of making sound machining decisions with limited supervision.
Responsibilities

• Program, set up, and operate CNC vertical milling machines, including Takumi machining centers.
• Create and modify CNC programs using CAM software and machine controls.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and work instructions.
• Interpret dimensions, tolerances, surface-finish requirements, and GD&T callouts.
• Determine proper machining sequences, workholding methods, tooling, speeds, feeds, and cutting parameters.
• Select and install cutting tools, toolholders, fixtures, vises, and workholding devices.
• Establish work coordinates, tool offsets, fixture offsets, and machine reference points.
• Perform machine setups for one-off parts, prototypes, repair work, and production runs.
• Verify programs through simulation, dry runs, single-block operation, and controlled first-piece machining.
• Inspect first-piece and in-process parts to confirm compliance with drawings and specifications.
• Use precision measuring equipment such as:
• Micrometers
• Calipers
• Height gauges
• Bore gauges
• Indicators
• Thread gauges
• Pin gauges
• Surface plates
• Make program, offset, tooling, and process adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy.
• Troubleshoot machining problems, including chatter, tool wear, poor finishes, dimensional variation, and workholding issues.
• Monitor machine operation and identify abnormal cutting conditions, tool failure, or equipment problems.
• Deburr and clean completed parts as required.
• Complete production travelers, inspection records, setup documentation, and other required paperwork.
• Maintain accurate traceability of materials, tooling, programs, and completed components.
• Work with engineering, quality, welding, fabrication, and production personnel to resolve manufacturing issues.
• Assist with process improvements intended to reduce setup time, cycle time, scrap, and tooling costs.
• Maintain organized CNC programs, setup sheets, tooling information, and revision-controlled documentation.
• Perform routine machine maintenance, including checking coolant, lubrication, tooling condition, and general machine cleanliness.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Follow all company safety procedures and quality-management requirements.
• Produce parts in accordance with customer, aerospace, defense, and government-contract requirements when applicable.
• Perform additional machining and manufacturing duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of CNC milling experience in a manufacturing or machine-shop environment.
• Ability to independently program, set up, and operate CNC vertical mills.
• Experience machining parts directly from engineering drawings and models.
• Strong understanding of G-code, M-code, tool offsets, work offsets, canned cycles, and CNC machining fundamentals.
• Ability to read and interpret detailed blueprints and technical drawings.
• Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
• Experience selecting cutting tools, holders, inserts, fixtures, speeds, and feeds.
• Ability to perform first-piece, in-process, and final dimensional inspections.
• Proficiency with standard precision measuring equipment.
• Ability to hold close tolerances and consistently produce conforming parts.
• Experience troubleshooting CNC programs, tooling, setups, and dimensional issues.
• Understanding of machining safety, lockout/tagout awareness, and proper material-handling practices.
• Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with supervisors, engineers, inspectors, and other machinists.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
• Reliable attendance and ability to complete assigned work within scheduled deadlines.
• High school diploma, GED, technical-school certificate, apprenticeship, or equivalent practical machining experience.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience operating or programming Takumi CNC vertical machining centers .
• Experience using Mastercam or similar CAM software.
• Experience with Fanuc-style CNC controls.
• Experience with three-axis CNC milling.
• Experience with fourth-axis machining is a plus.
• Experience machining a variety of materials, including:
• Aluminum
• Carbon steel
• Alloy steel
• Stainless steel
• 4130 steel
• 6061 aluminum
• 7050 aluminum
• Engineering plastics
• Experience working on low-volume, high-mix, prototype, repair, aerospace, defense, or government-contract components.
• Experience developing fixtures and workholding solutions.
• Experience improving existing programs and reducing machine cycle times.
• Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality systems and controlled manufacturing documentation.
• Experience using a CMM, optical comparator, or other advanced inspection equipment.
• Manual milling, turning, or general toolroom experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and work at CNC machines for extended periods.
• Ability to regularly lift and move materials, tooling, fixtures, and components weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to bend, reach, climb, kneel, and perform repetitive shop-floor tasks.
• Ability to safely use lifting equipment for heavier parts and fixtures.
• Ability to work around machinery, metal chips, coolant, cutting fluids, oils, noise, and normal manufacturing conditions.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety footwear.

We are looking for a machinist who takes ownership of their work. The successful candidate will be capable of reviewing a drawing, planning the machining process, programming the part, setting up the machine, producing the component, and verifying that the finished part meets all requirements.
This position is best suited for someone who is dependable, mechanically skilled, quality-focused, and comfortable working in a high-mix manufacturing environment.
