Surgical Technologist

The surgical technologist works under the direct supervision of an RN in the operating room environment. Must possess strong clinical knowledge and skills regarding operating room procedures. Must be highly motivated and self-directed with a positive attitude and good communication skills. Willing to have flexible work schedules and duties, which will include ancillary duties such as cleaning rooms between cases, stocking room, and helping in the central sterile area. Demonstrates a proven record in expediting room turnover. Displays good organizational skills and an understanding of the importance of teamwork in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Actively participating in the time-out procedure and labeling all solutions and medications before transferring to the sterile field.
• Counting according to policy with no deviations except in emergency situations.
• Following policy for the safe handling of specimens, implants, and explants.
• Checking packaging or containers for integrity to promote aseptic technique.
• Knowledge of procedures, instrumentation, and equipment needed for the procedure.
• Being scrubbed and in the room before the patient enters and being efficient in set-up for the procedure.
• Maintaining and protecting the sterile field during the procedure.
• Practicing safe working habits by following policies on the safe use of safety items provided.
• Communicating effectively with other team members and following the chain of command.
• Completing required assignments and competencies on time.
• Being willing to precept and help peers and students when needed.
• Returning the room to a ready state at the end of the case, and utilizing free time to help others who are busy.
• Reporting broken or unusable instruments or equipment to the nurse leader.
• Practicing good care of instruments and equipment by using fluids and enzyme cleaner.
