PURPOSE :
The Automation Engineer serves as a technical subject matter expert for the safe development, integration, implementation, operation, and improvement of industrial manufacturing equipment across multiple manufacturing facilities. Safety is the first priority throughout the equipment lifecycle, from concept and design through installation, commissioning, operation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.
This role combines manufacturing equipment expertise with project execution and technical leadership. For new capital and Product Development projects, the engineer leads the assigned manufacturing equipment scope, working with project teams, plants, OEMs, machine builders, and systems integrators from concept development and equipment specification through design review, build, installation, commissioning, and production handoff. The engineer is expected to manage their equipment scope, coordinate technical resources and suppliers, communicate risks and progress, and drive issues to resolution while remaining aligned with the overall project team.
The engineer also supports existing production equipment, leading or assisting with equipment performance and reliability improvements, structured problem solving and root cause corrective action (RCCA), and significant or complex equipment issues. Most solutions are delivered collaboratively through plant, supplier, and technical teams; however, the engineer must be technically capable and willing to work directly with industrial equipment and provide hands-on troubleshooting and startup support when required.
Equipment may include inspection systems, case packers, robotic systems, in-mold labeling equipment, product retrieval systems, assembly equipment, material-handling systems, machine vision systems, and other custom manufacturing equipment. This role may also contribute to equipment standards, supplier
development, emerging technology evaluation, and other initiatives that improve manufacturing capability across the organization.
A successful candidate will combine broad knowledge of mechanical, electrical, controls, robotics, vision, safety, and manufacturing systems with the project management, organization, and communication skills necessary to lead equipment scopes across plants, suppliers, and cross-functional teams. Advanced programming expertise is not required; the emphasis is on understanding the complete equipment solution, challenging designs, managing execution, and solving manufacturing problems.
This role directly impacts safety, quality, equipment reliability and uptime, labor efficiency, manufacturing performance, and long-term manufacturing capability across multiple plants.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Maintain safety as the first priority in all engineering activities and technical decisions.
* Serve as the technical SME for assigned manufacturing equipment scopes within Product Development, Operations, and other cross-functional projects.
* Assist in developing equipment scopes, specifications, layouts, RFQs, performance requirements, and acceptance criteria.
* Manage assigned equipment work to approved scope, schedule, budget, technical requirements, and project objectives.
* Evaluate manufacturing equipment concepts and designs for safety, performance, reliability, maintainability, and integration.
* Lead and participate in technical design reviews involving mechanical, electrical, controls, robotics, vision, and other equipment systems.
* Lead and provide technical direction to OEMs, machine builders, systems integrators, and equipment suppliers.
* Coordinate technical interfaces between multiple suppliers and pieces of manufacturing equipment.
* Lead or support equipment design reviews, Factory Acceptance Testing, installation, commissioning, startup, and production handoff.
* Hold equipment suppliers accountable for technical requirements, performance expectations, milestones, and corrective actions.
* Partner with manufacturing plants to improve existing equipment safety, reliability, quality, throughput, scrap, and maintainability.
* Lead or support RCCA, structured problem solving, and continuous improvement activities involving manufacturing equipment.
* Provide remote or on-site engineering support for significant or complex equipment issues and equipment failures.
* Coordinate plant, maintenance, supplier, and technical resources to troubleshoot problems and drive sustainable resolution.
* Provide hands-on equipment support when required, including inspection, adjustment, testing, and troubleshooting.
* Evaluate aging or underperforming equipment and develop equipment solutions and capital justification for upgrade, refurbishment, or replacement.
* Support development and application of equipment standards, lessons learned, supplier capabilities, and emerging manufacturing technologies.
* Support equipment documentation, training, and knowledge transfer to plant engineering, maintenance, and operations teams.
Desired Experience
* Experience working with industrial manufacturing equipment, production machinery, or custom capital equipment in a manufacturing environment.
* Experience leading or supporting manufacturing equipment through multiple phases of its lifecycle, including design, build, installation, commissioning, startup, and production support.
* Experience working with OEMs, machine builders, systems integrators and equipment suppliers through technical reviews, project execution and issue resolution.
* Experience with manufacturing equipment such as inspection systems, case packers, robotics, material handling, in-mold labeling systems, product retrieval systems, assembly equipment, or machine vision.
* Experience evaluating equipment designs for safety, reliability, maintainability, performance, and integration with surrounding manufacturing systems.
* Experience with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), equipment installation, commissioning, or production ramp-up.
* Experience with RCCA, structured problem solving, reliability improvement, or continuous improvement involving manufacturing equipment.
* Experience troubleshooting complex equipment issues and coordinating plant, maintenance, supplier, and technical resources to drive resolution.
* Experience evaluating aging or underperforming assets and developing equipment solutions or capital justification for upgrade, refurbishment, or replacement.
* Working familiarity with mechanical, electrical, controls, robotics, vision, pneumatic, and machine-safety systems used in industrial equipment.
* Working knowledge of PLC/HMI-controlled equipment sufficient to understand equipment operation, participate in technical reviews, and support troubleshooting; advanced PLC programming experience is not required.
* Experience managing multiple equipment-related priorities or project scopes and communicating effectively across engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and project teams.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Associate or bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant industrial experience.
* Strong practical understanding of industrial manufacturing equipment and mechanical/electrical systems.
* Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, equipment layouts, electrical schematics, technical specifications, and equipment documentation.
* Strong technical problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes, evaluate risk, and drive issues to resolution.
* Ability to lead and coordinate plants teams, suppliers, OEMs and cross-functional stakeholder to achieve project and technical objectives.
* Demonstrated project-management skills, including management of scope, schedule, cost, risk, suppliers, priorities, communication and technical deliverables.
* Ability to effectively manage multiple concurrent projects, equipment issues, and competing priorities across multiple manufacturing locations.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively at both technical and non-technical levels.
* Willingness and ability to work hands-on with industrial equipment when required, including equipment inspection, troubleshooting, testing, and adjustment.
* Demonstrated commitment to safety, sound engineering practices, and responsible technical decision-making.
* Self-directed, organized, and capable of working effectively both independently and as part of cross-functional teams.
* Ability and willingness to travel (up to 50%) as required to support plants, suppliers, equipment builds, installations, commissioning, and technical issues.
